Possible Grissom was his mother's surname. He married Frances Elizabeth Garrison whose parents were Elias Earl Garrison and Mary Charles from Greenville Co., SC but died in Tippah Co. MS-now in Union Co., MS. I'm searching for Robert's parents. There was a John McElroy (b. 1807) and his wife Matilda Berry, both from Greenville Co., SC but I think his parents were James McElroy and Elizabeth Ford; they didn't have a son named Robert. Can you help?

The mother in the James Box 4 Mar 1799 family was Jane Muckleroy (other spellings including McRoy), daughter of Isaac and Sarah Floyd. They lived in Tippah Co., MS. Sarah Floyd was from South Carolina. On the other hand, the other large McElroy family group had South Carolina as a major residence so your family might belong to either bunch.
