Has anyone attempted to post a message to the McElroy list since Friday and found that it was not posted? If so, would you please notify me at mdmgen@aol.com There have been some problems with RootsWeb on some lists. Since we were in the midst of a Roll Call, I have been very suspicious that ours is one of the lists that is having a problem. Maryann Dixon Moseby List Admin

It has been called to my attention that I typed the wrong dates. All dates I mentioned for Johnston and Wake Cos., NC should be 1700s instead of 1800s. The French and Indian war was 1760 instead of 1860. Sorry about that. Be
have the Scotch-Irish McElroys in America who is willing to look up Sarah McElroy who married James McKay in N.Ireland - County Antrim, and came to the U.S. in 1834? They lived in Western Pennsylvania. Thanks. Gobnait Ni Leocháin Genealogy: Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living.
I don't have any South Carolina residence for John and Frances. That is not to say that they did not go there, but not to my knowledge. He died in Johnston/Wake Co., NC about 1861. I have recently been told that John and Archibald died in the French and Indian War. The timing is right for the War and the date I have fits - 1860 for both, just not sure if it was really French and Indian War that caused their deaths. I don't know where to look for French and Indian War deaths - if there was one. I have seen my William Dawson, father of Sarah Dawson listed on a French and Indian War list from North Carolina. William was formerly in Goochland Co., VA. John sold or gave deed of gift to John Belk, husband of Mary Ann Muckle in Johnston/Wake Co. I don't see any connections with John or Archibald after that date. John Mackelroy gave or sold his home place to John Belk and was still living on it after that date. A James Muckleroy/various spellings witnessed a deed for John. James had a wife named Ruth. I don't see any more Felps/Phelps connections in Johnston/Wake. There may be some in Craven (which became Johnston). I would have to look in my notes. Archibald's son, Avington lived briefly in South Carolina. He moved there from Oglethorpe Co., GA. His son, Isaac married Sarah Floyd, daughter of William Floyd who was living in Pendleton Co., SC. Isaac and Sarah and William Floyd and other members of the extended family moved to Franklin Co., TN after going back to Oglethorpe from South Carolina. Avington died, I believe, in Oglethorpe Co. He left an estate in Oglethorpe. Wife Sarah Dawson Muckleroy lived (and died) in Oglethorpe and was a successful "drawer" of the Georgia Land Lottery which was offered to widows and orphans. Avington's son, Micajah/Mitchell/Michael/"Mike" - married the daughter of Nathan Reid/Reed, a Rev. War soldier. Do you know if there might be any connection with your Reeds? Betty: Thanks for your details on John and Frances MACKELROY (var. sp.), abt. 1690-1765 MD and NC. I had most of that in bits and pieces, but I was glad to copy it as a whole. I, too, have that Frances may have been a DURHAM, but no proof. As I said in my "roll call", I descend from daughter Rachel who married Avington FELPS in 1730 ( I have a copy of the MD certificate). They had "Rachel's Delight" (dowry, no doubt) when they went to VA. Then they went back to MD and sold it. Next I find them in Rowan Co., NC, on the Yadkin River near Reeds Bluff, with children Abigail, Thomas, Aquilla. Abigail married George REED. I have good records forward from them. Do you have anything more on Abigail or Rachel after they went to NC? Some say that Avington and Rachel went to SC to be close to her parents and perhaps died there. I would appreciate anything from anyone. Redell Reed redellr@juno.com
Thank you for posting your family. I doubt that there is any connection with my McElroy/various spelling families unless it was back in Ireland before1713. However, my husband's Stokes family is from Oakland, Coles Co., IL and I have seen your McElroys on the census and wondered who they were. Since this is a farming community, it is hard to tell when one is in Oakland or Matoon as they are nearby and the communities are not large. If there is any possibility that they were in the area in 1850, you might look at neighboring Edgar Co. Edgar Co. 1850 census lists the COUNTY as well as the state where individuals were born. I expect they also list more information for people not born in the US as well. My husband's families in Illinois were from Wayne Co., Indiana and Pike Co., Ohio directly before coming to Illinois. We found information on Jim's family at the courthouse and cemetery. At the local library, there was a Goodspeed type ancestry book of a type published in many rural communities in the 1880s where we found information about his Stokes family It gave the name of John Stokes parents and his brothers and sisters. During the sesquicentennial, there were sometimes books about the community and citizens published. I know there was one on Oakland in Coles Co. We asked about our family at the Post Office and were able to place an order for a copy of the book. There was very little to help us as no one in his family submitted anything, but there was a school football picture which included Jim's father. My McElroy line is skimpy but here goes: First mention is 1860 Illinois Census, Coles County, Matoon township shows James McElroy, age 36, farmer born in Ireland. Living with him is Bridget McElroy, age 22 also born in Ireland (I thought this was his wife but it turns out to be his sister) 1870 Illinois Census, Coles County, Matoon Township shows JOHN McElroy, age 47, farmer with Bridget McElroy, and two children James and Patrick Welch ages 10 and 8. (Patrick Welch is my great grandfather). Bridget is the mother of these two boys, but no mention of Welch father 1880 Illinois Census, Coles County, Matoon township lists John McElroy age 59, with nephews James and Patrick ages 20 and 18 and a niece Mary age 22, previously not mentioned. It appears that Bridget the mother of the children has died. It lists that John McElroy was born in Ireland, as were both of his parents. The Welch children list Illinois as their birthplace, but both their parents were born in Ireland. I then follow Patrick Welch to the 1900 Missouri Census, Kansas City where he is married to Alice Brady and has 4 children. That is the extent of my information on McElroy. I have tried to find a death certificate on Bridget McElroy Welch with no luck. No able to find a marriage certificate for Bridget McElroy and unknown Welch man. I also searched for John McElroy for a marriage license, but none either. Would love to find anyone working on this line. Donna Fisher Kansas City MO

I had it on my database, but apparently it was "given" to me rather than having a definite source. Zachariah Arnold McElroy who married Sarah Mariah Browers is listed in Family Adventures, but no siblings are included. A comment is as follows: Zachary Arnold McElroy and Mary Arnold moved to Mississippi in the 1830s. He is listed in the 1840 census of Yalobusha County, Mississippi as coming from Georgia. Also, William & Barney McElroy are listed. They may be brothers. Sorry I leaped to that conclusion. I'm checking in with my roll call: I descend from John and Frances Muckelroy (Muckleduroy)(McElroy) through their daughter Rachel (sister of Archibald), who married Avington Felps (Phelps) in Maryland in 1730, Their daughter, Abigail, married George Reed , where and when I don't know, but they lived and raised a family of 9 children in Rowan County, NC. He died in 1785 and she lived a few more years. One son, George Reed, Jr. married Martha Green, and they had 15 children in Rowan County, NC. That's how I descend. Redell Reed
