There is a large Civil War monument downtown in front of the Renaissance Hotel which has a display area inside. The walls are covered with engraved names of the men who participated from Cuyahoga County ( the county where Cleveland sits ) and among them was a McElroy. I don't remember any more information as to his name, but thought that I would mention it here in case you or others are interested. It may have been a James, though not necessarily your James. To make it easier to find this name and the unit to which he was assigned, his name is listed on the side OPPOSITE the entrance, on the RIGHT-hand side. If I remember correctly, it is a couple of panels from the right, on about the middle portion of the panel. Mark McLeroy Appling, Georgia
Hello, Is there anyone out there that could look up James&Ruth McElroy and children in Portage County, Northfield township Ohio in 1850? I'm new to this list so hope i'm not overstepping it by asking this. LOL Let me know if I am :) Thankyou, Becca
Gobnait, That I have not as of yet, alot of what I do have is off census/marriage/ssdi/and Nesbit's history done by a: Dr. John Pratt Nesbitt It is about 80 pages long but the portion on my McElroy line is about 3 pages. I'd be willing to send you the file in its entirety *spelled right?* LOL, or just the information on the McElroy line. Let me know if anyone out there wants that. Hi, Rebecca. Have you come across any information on the parents of Sarah McElroy (married to James McKay) who came to W.Pa. in 1834 from County Antrim, N.Ireland? Gobnait Ni Leocháin Genealogy: Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living.
Hello, I am working on my fathers line of McElroys, various spellings I have found in this search such as: Mkelroey, Macelroy, McElroy, Mc Elroy, McIlroy. The first ancestor is my grandfather Charles Howard born to Josephine (Bertrand) McElroy and Edward McElroy in Ohio. I have Edward and family in a 1900 Ashtabula county census, then I have Edward, Josephine, Edna, and their son Cecil in a 1920 Colorado census, then I have josephine McElroy's death in the california death index but have lost Edward somehwere and some of their kids. Edward's father was Samuel McElroy who married an Elizabeth Brown, Samuel was born About 1832 in fairfield township, westmoreland county PA, and married Elizabeth in Jackson County, Ohio. Samuels Parents were James II McElroy born in ligonier valley, Pennsylvania and he married a Ruth Nesbit they relocated around 1835 to Northfield township, Portage County Ohio. I have lost track of them after this time. James II McElroys parents were James Macelroey/McElroy and Betsy Douglas who settled in Ligonier Valley, Pennsylvania. James I died between 1800-1810 and Betsy died between 1810-1820 their children that I know of were: Joseph Alexander, John Douglas McElroy, Mary, James II, and an Unknown that died between 1810-820. Anyone on this McElroy line have anything pertaining to this family? I am willing to share all that i've gathered as well. THankyou for reading this, Rebecca McElroy

I have not had a chance to check some information, but this is interesting because I am guessing that these Bryan gentlemen are of my maternal lines, while John Mackelroy would be of my paternal lines. Also, can you (or anyone else) tell me what this means...that he "proved" the apprenticeship?? Thanks, Mark McLeroy ps can you give me the name of this source that you are examining?

Probable divorce sometime in 1890's in Taney County, Missouri as Harrison remarried in 1899 and she was still alive in 1902. Had some children that lived in Greer County, Oklahoma in 1902 as Harrison died there while visting his children. She apparently lived elsewhere as they wrote their motherof their fathers death..but where she was living at the time is unknown. Adeline Mcelroy married a William Massengale in Pacific City, Iowa Mills County in 1870's at the same time that Harrison and Emma Mcelroy Randall were living there. Possible connection between Adeline and Emma.
I am going through some Johnston Co., NC books and entering deed abstracts, etc. The events form a "time line" for individuals I am interested enough in to go to this trouble. Right now, I am looking at an entry dated 10 Jul 1763 for John Mackelroy (proved William Bryan(t) to Nathaniel Kimbrough to apprentice his son John Bryan). Name is also spelled McIlroy as a witness and Mackelroy as the person "proving" this apprenticeship. My/our ancestor, John Mackelroy I (wife Frances) was still living at this time. I have his death date as after 23 Nov 1765. His sons John and Archibald may have died in the French and Indian War (I have no proof but there was a group of soldiers of Johnston Co. who went to Virginia in this War). At any rate, I have that both John and Archibald died about 1760. Does anyone have anything different? I want to be clear as to which John this information should be added it. Betty
