I believe my McLeroy was related to Andrew J. McLeroy--McElroy--McKleroy in the 1850 to 1880 Stewart Co., Ga. census. He was living surrounded by Johnson's and Meadow's . I have found my Mc Leroy, McIlROY, McElroy as M.L. --M.C. and of course Mack. His wife was Martha E. Johnson. Her maiden name was Meadows. Have not found him past the 1900 Hill Co., Tx. census. Greetings! I think I have recently discovered a connection to the McILROY family of Ross Co., Ohio and Loudon or Frederick Co., VA, and I thought I'd post the theory to this list and see whether anyone can prove, disprove or profit by it. My ggg-grandfather, Solomon CHALFIN or CHAFFIN, who lived from 1779-1855 was married to a woman called both 'Isabella' and 'Phebe,' whose maiden name has always previously been given as McCOY or McKOY, but no one, to my knowledge, has ever been able to find a trace of her origins. I now believe strongly that her name was actually McILROY. My reasons are as follows: 1. Isabella McILROY and Isabella/Phebe CHALFIN were both born 29 [sic] or 28 February 1783 (both dates are given for each, and even '20 Feb.,' perhaps because of helpful scribes trying to make sense of the problem of a '29 February 1783'). 2. Isabella McILROY was born either at Loudon County, Virginia (adjacent to modern day Berkeley Co., WV) or Back Creek, Frederick County, VA (now in Berkeley Co., WV). Solomon lived at Back Creek, and married his Isabella in Berkeley Co., 21 November 1803 3. Solomon and Isabella moved to Ross County, Ohio, within a few years of their marriage. The McILROYs also moved to Ross County, at least before 1812, as numerous records attest. 4. The second daughter and second son of Solomon and Isabella were named Rebecca and Daniel, probably after the maternal grandparents. Isabella's parents were Daniel and Rebecca [PYOTT] McILROY. 5. Solomon and Isabella's son, Joseph, married Sarah Ann DAVIS, the daughter of Isabella McILROY's younger sister, Deborah. Marriages between first cousins were quite common at this time. Considering I found Isabella McILROY by a search on her unusual birthdate, and began investigating her knowing nothing else about her, the connections, proximities and coincidences that turned up are overwhelming. There is but little doubt left in my mind that Solomon CHALFIN married Isabella McILROY and that the same linguistic tendency to change rare names to more common ones that transformed CHALFIN into CHAFFIN also turned McILROY into McCOY. (Solomon and Isabella were illiterate, making this even more understandable.)

I suggest that you go to GenForum and look at everything Betty Stokes has posted and also go to the MCELROY-L mailing list archives on Rootsweb and look at the information she has sent about any John Mackleroy. She uses that spelling most of the time. She seems to have information on all McElroys in her database. If you haven't corresponded with her, you may want to send her a note. jstokes@houston.rr.com http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=MCELROY Also, I found some interesting King information on GenForum posts: 5588, 5657, 5691, 12629 and 12729. It is funny, that I started looking for Cullen King data last night and you post to the Ricks list today. Lyn
I looked at all the Johns I have - and there are a LOT - at least the ones whose names start with John. The nearest I could find was born in 1805, died 1886 in GA. No Matilda Berry One of Isaac, son of Avington's daughters, Jane Muckleroy, married a Box. They did lived in Tippah Co., MS. There are some younger children of Isaac, father of Jane who are not definitely identified. I don't know of a John. Isaac was in South Carolina with his father Avington, when he married Sarah Floyd. They returned to Oglethorpe Co., GA and thence to Franklin Co., TN. The Boxes moved on to Tippah Co., MS after that, probably around the 1830s. They also lived in Chickasaw and Houston Co., MS. Since you said South Carolina, I was assuming that your John was from the other McElroy line. There are Mackelroys/other spellings in Mississippi, but the only one I know of and they weren't there very long was Avington Muckleroy with his family. They went back to Oglethorpe Co., GA.
