I'm sorry to say that none of those names ring a bell. The only ones I knew of from Mississippi were my grandfather,John McElroy, and his 4 brothers, one of whom was named Andrew(don't know the others names!)Grandpa John came to Arkansas and married Mary Jane McVey,and they had Fred(my father),Ethel Cora,Ida,Lindy,Bessie, and Hugh. I'm going to contact my first cousin in Houston,TX,Margaret Levi.(her mother was my aunt Ida.)Maybe she can shed some light on this.I've hit a brick wall!!I was born late in life to my parents, and my parents died when I was young.I can't remember a lot of things Aunt Ethel told me back in the early 70's,but I wish I had documented them and written them down. I will certainally let you know if I find anything out that would help you in your search!God Bless! Sincerely, Mindy McElroy Tucker

    1. [MCELROY-L] CURTIN+ McELROY> Australia ca. 1885
    2. Hi, List! This is my first post here on MCELROY after many great years on the rootsweb.com surname boards. I'm hoping for good luck with this query, as the data that led to it was difficult to get and took years to extract. Recently, I learned from my newfound 1st Cousin, once removed, that our CURTIN grandfather, Lawrence CURTIN, was one of five brothers who abt 1885 left Ireland on a ship destined for the USA and Australia. Lawrence CURTIN and one of his brothers (name unknown) disembarked in NYC, NY, but the other three (names unknown) went to Australia. My cousin's direct oral history as told to her by her father, Lawrence's son, William CURTIN, states that once in Australia, the CURTIN brothers married into the MCELROY family and became sheepmen. At this moment, the above tale is legend; I'm hoping to back it up with some facts. Can anyone on the MCELROY list help me? I practice data reciprocity, which means I give back as much data as I receive, so please know I'm good for whatever assistance I can give to a fellow family researcher. Looking forward to hearing from you! Sincerely, Livy at Genuspecies@aol.com

    3. Just wanted to share a bit of information I found on the 1880 census at www.familysearch.org. It has taken literally years to untangle my McElroy/McLeroy heritage. Sometimes I just get frustrated and leave it alone for a while. With the help of other researchers, I was able to be 99% certain that my Micajah Mc b, 1785 (son to Sarah Dawson and Avington Mc.) was indeed the father of James Minter McLeroy, born in Yalobusha Ms., in 1836 Micajah first married Francis Reid, then MUCH later in life married Mary M. Wood. James Minter (b. 1836)and Sarah (b. 1839) were the children of this later marriage. Micajah died in 1839 and Mary Wood died in 1942, leaving their very young children orphans. They were raised by John Baker Wood, Mary's father, according to guardianship papers. I have searched and searched for a tidbit...anything! about Sarah... no luck. Then in the 1880 census at www.familysearch.org I found Sarah living with her brother James M. in Brazos Co., Tx. She was 40 years old., and listed as a "widow" ... however, she (or the census taker!) enumerated her last name as McLeroy. Also in the household was a one month old niece to James M, named Carrie MCLEROY. So now I have other mysteries to solve... was Sarah indeed a "widow", or was she the mother of an illegitimate child, (Carrie) . But that's the joy of working on family history... Always more to do! bev
