Caldwell pub in - 1880 page - 594 JAMES McELROY was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, November 17, 1812 , and in 1835 was united in marriage to Sarah McCauslen, by whom he brought up five children. In 1837, he moved to Wills Creek and operated a grist mill for some five years. In 1842, he embarked in the lumber business in Steubenville, and continued in that business until 1852, when he came to his present location. He owns 125 acres and is now engaged in farming. Our subject's father whose name was also James, was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania ; married Mary Mitchell in 1808, and removed to this county a short time after. He died in 1858 , aged seventy-six years. His wife's father, Nathaniel Mitchell, served all through the Revolutionary War, and for three years was one of General Washington's body guards. I am not related, just hope it helps.

She had a child named Mary Ann about 1721 in Baltimore Co., MD. Note: Mary Ann and James are not listed as children in Baltimore Co., MD. Because of the evidence, it appears that Mary Ann is a daughter. I have changed my mind about James and decided he probably is a grandson - after considerable study. The only record linking him to John Mackelroy we have for him is that he witnessed a deed. I believe he is a grandson. It will take me a while to retrace my thoughts as to how I came to this conclusion. However, I have an open mind and will discuss if anyone is interested. The mother in the James Box 4 Mar 1799 family was Jane Muckleroy (other spellings including McRoy), daughter of Isaac and Sarah Floyd. They lived in Tippah Co., MS. Sarah Floyd was from South Carolina. On the other hand, the other large McElroy family group had South Carolina as a major residence so your family might belong to either bunch.
