    1. [MCELROY-L] From List Admin, Please Read - Focus: Genealogy
    2. Please remember that the RootsWeb lists are for Genealogy.  RootsWeb has issued to the List Administrators a directive that we are to keep our lists focused on Genealogy - not world affairs or other subjects.  I understand that it is difficult to keep focused, but on these lists, it is necessary.  I have chosen not to post the directive from RootsWeb, but will do so if necessary. This post is not aimed at any individual.  Had it not been for the directive, I would probably have been one of the leaders in posting comments -- but I have been reminded; and now am reminding all of you: THIS LIST IS FOR GENEALOGY - not current world news, religion, computer software problems or any other subject, except those related to genealogy and only genealogy. 3. Hello... I am searching for my great-grandparents who were last found in the 1880 census in Vails Gate, NY......In 1871, my grandfather, Fred James McElroy was born to them in May in Vails Gate so I know the family was there at least from 1871 to 1880 but where did they go after this??? I have been "stonewalled" in an attempt to find them. I welcome and thank all who might be able to assist me in my search for them... 1. [MCELROY-L] Information Received on Lists or Elsewhere
    2. Anytime you receive any information from anywhere, it is up to you to prove it. Never, ever take any information at its face value. Always take the time and prove it. The fact that someone shares information they have with the list does not make them a bad person - even if their information is proven erroneous. I seriously doubt that there is any serious researcher out there that hasn't had data in their data base (that they thought they had proven) that they have had to later go back and correct. At least I have several times had to go back and correct information in my data. I have taken Census data from two or more years as proving family facts - to only later, with more reliable data, to have to even change the way the family name was spelled. There is no way that I can emphasize too strongly that it is YOUR responsibility to PROVE any data you receive. There is no reason for you to become angry because someone might give you data that contains errors. Just nicely, inform them and anyone else that might have received the information. Also, there is no reason for someone that shares their files to have to become defensive because they shared a file. When someone tells them it contain errors, if it is their own data and they have proven it, they can counter with their proof. However, if the data is not their own, it is best that they either prove it before they share it again, or else find out in what way it is in error and at least check out that portion. Regardless, it is best to keep accusations on the list at a minimum, while we do bring erroneous data to the attention to the person presenting it. I would suggest that you first bring it to their attention privately. Then if they do nothing, bring it to the attention of the list, if it has been sent to the list. Otherwise, just remember to check out and prove any data you receive from anyone - even people you know to prove everything, because they too may have made a mistake or more accurate information may have come to light since they found their data.
