I just rechecked the Brooklyn City directories for the McElroy living at 349 Van Brunt Ave in the 1880s. Found Dennis listed twice, 1886/1887 and 1887/1888 publications. This is where I found Daniel living in both the 1870 and 1880 census with his Sister Margaret Rooney and Susan Donnelly (Anns sister). Also Daniel listed that address when he witnessed Bernards Nat. in 1886. So I'm convinced that for whatever reasons, Daniel often used Dennis. ?????? This also indicates the Dennis I found arriving on the (correct ship) Tapscott in Aug of 1887 (Irish to america FTM CD), is probably Daniel. From now on I will always search and list both first names. There are more than one explantion for the term, Black Irish, but one I have read had to do with the Spanish who escaped from the Spanish Armada after its defeat in the English Channel. Many reached Ireland and hid out there and stayed to intermarry with the Irish. Since the Spanish controlled the Netherlands for some time perhaps the term, Black Dutch might refer to descendents of Spanish who were in the Netherlands at during this time and who intermarried with the Dutch. Their descendents would likely have had dark hair and dark eyes instead of the lighter tone of the Dutch. >From: MCELROY-D-request@rootsweb.com >Reply-To: MCELROY-L@rootsweb.com >To: MCELROY-D@rootsweb.com >Subject: MCELROY-D Digest V03 #52 >Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 01:03:42 -0700 > ><< message2.txt >> ><< message4.txt >> ><< message6.txt >> _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? In seaching for McElroys in Providence, Rhode Island probate records recently, I came across this one that includes family members and their place of residence. I am not related to this family (that I know of), but hope it helps someone. SARAH McELROY of Providence Rhode Island, died on 1 March 1911. Her heirs-at-law were: WILLIAM McELROY of Charlestown, Massachusetts, Brother. HUGH McELROY of San Francisco, California, Brother. According to the Rhode Island death index, Sarah was 63 years of age and kin was listed as Bernard and Ann McElroy (likely her parents.) Loree Muldowney

Having studied/researched Bernard McElroys for over a decade, I have some sobering news. Both Bernard and McElroy in the 19th century in both Fermanagh and the USA, is like John and Smith. Roll up your sleeves, and start digging in the USA records, and relatives. In NYC civil marriage records are the best, to look backward, for name parents of both bride and groom. Don't forget Bernard's wife family! I, and several other descendants here in Oz, believed James married Margaret McElroy on 10th Feb 1846 in Kilmore, Armagh. We have now been advised by professional researcher in Ireland that is not our James. His death certificate shows he married 3 times. First wife is recorded as "unknown". He married (2) Rachel Trouton/Troughton 26/2/1853 in Mullavilly, Armagh, and after her death in Oz in Dec 1877 he married Susannah Armstrong on 6th Sept 1879 in West Maitland, NSW. James was born abt 1829 in Armagh- his parents Thomas McElroy and Annie McElroy nee McCalvery. James had a sister Elizabeth born abt 1832 in Tullamacain, Armagh who married a Robert Gilmore at Kilmore, Armagh on 2nd Feb 1854. Hope you can help us sort this out. Look forward to your reply. I cannot see any references to Deery. Regards, Alan Skidmore.

Hello list is there any one have any McElroy's in farwell Texas trying to take some of the road blocks Out Thomas Ray McElroy
Margaret McElroy-Rooney is the sister of Daniel and Bernard McElroy, all from Ireland in the 1850s. They came from the border of Monaghan and Fermanagh. Thanks to both my cousin Edward McElroy and fellow Irish/NYC researcher Charles Sullivan, today I had another breakthru on my McElroy NYC family. I found Terrance Rooney (28) in the 21st Ward 1860 census living with his wife Margaret McElroy-Rooney (29), their son Edward (5), daughter Margaret (3). Icing on the cake, living with them was James McElroy, likely another brother of Margaret, Daniel and Bernard. I already had found Margaret and kids in both the Brooklyn 1870/1880 census. Terrance disappears by the 1870 census. He had no Pension Index for the Civil war. He fathered Robert the youngest, before 1867. So he died or left between 1866-1869. From past experience, NYC civil marriage records give more parental info on the bride and groom. All I know is their oldest was 5 in 1860. I will next search for BOTH their Civil Likely in USA NYC in possible marriage index records. I will also write the nearest Catholic Church to the corner of 39th St and 2nd Ave, where they lived in 1860, I will also look to St Gabriel records now at church of the Sacred Hearts on 307 E 33st. They sent me Bernard's marriage in 1868 from St Gabriels while he lived at 301 E 37th St. I will also request baptism records for both their children Edward and Margaret. Lower priority research will be Terrance's death, James MCelroy in City directories 1960s and 1870 census! , I have the FTM CD Irish to America 1846-1865. It is by no means perfect, but I'm cross referencing both Margaret McElroy and Rooney with Terrance Rooney, to see if they came over together. The purpose of this research is to determine where these McElroys came from in Ireland. My only success was finding Daniel listed twice in the Emigrant Savings bank records in 1864 and 1867. In both entry's he listed the same address, the same parents as Bernard, his same boat and year, but listed two different Counties, Fermangh and Monaghan. I will soon revisit the Emigrant Savings Bank Index on four more people. Terrance Rooney, Margaret Rooney, James Mcelroy and Robert MCelroy. Any Rooneys or McElroys out there that can help? Dick Webber NC
