It is a military tombstone. I found this additional info: During the War Between the States, 19 year old William served as a corporal with the Union Army, Company "I" - 138th Illinois Infantry ..."organized at Camp Wood, Quincy, Ill., by Col. John W. Goodwin, and was mustered in June 21, 1864, for one hundred days. On 26th July, the Regiment moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kas., and was assigned to garrison duty, Colonel Goodwin commanding post...from July 7th to August 3d-Brigadier Gen. Thomas A. Davis commanding District of North Kansas, and Maj. General Curtis commanding Dept. of Kansas. The Regiment was mustered out...at Springfield, Ill., October 14th, 1864."
