I know that you have been around a while and so probably already know about a Hugh and Mary McConnell in Orange County, NY. My own mysterious McConnells were boatmen in Morris and Sussex Counties and I have wondered whether any of their ancestors used the Delaware River to travel long distances. I think we already talked about another James born about 1818 who was a boatman in Sussex County. Sources disagree, but one census for him says that he was born in "southern NJ." This James married a Heldebrant. I probably shared this information with you before, but am sharing it with you know in case I didn't.
