Author: ksaxe Surnames: McConnell, Heldebrant Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/2397.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Sandy, I don't know if I can help, but we have talked before, and I wonder if there is any chance that your southern NJ McConnells had any northern NJ connections. I know that you have been around a while and so probably already know about a Hugh and Mary McConnell in Orange County, NY. My own mysterious McConnells were boatmen in Morris and Sussex Counties and I have wondered whether any of their ancestors used the Delaware River to travel long distances. I think we already talked about another James born about 1818 who was a boatman in Sussex County. Sources disagree, but one census for him says that he was born in "southern NJ." This James married a Heldebrant. I probably shared this information with you before, but am sharing it with you know in case I didn't. Author: sandymcconnell Surnames: McConnell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/2397/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for the parents of James McConnell, born 1814 in New Jersey (Billingsport according to family tradition but unconfirmed). There appear to be a lot of McConnells in this area where Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey meet, but I can't seem to fit him into any of these families. Family tradition also says his parents names were Hugh and Mary. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ksaxe Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/2394.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Tia, you're welcome. The age data on William is interesting because there was a couple in Lambertville I thought might be his parents, but they had a son William born in 1869, which would make that William younger than the 1910 census says yours was. (Also younger than what the 1920 census says) If the Lambertville couple's child were actually older than your William is supposed to be, I would shrug it off. But usually years get taken off as people get older, not vice versa. Still, we are only talking about a 2 or 3 year difference. Another problem with the Lambertville family is that I don't see a Margaret in their family, and the 1920 census shows a Margaret, sister of William, in the household of your great grandparents. It sounds like your grandmother doesn't have much knowledge of her McConnell grandparents. Did she know them at at all, and does she have any idea when they died? I know my grandmother said that her mother, Jesse, had a total of 11 children, but only the three prev. mentioned (Mary, Cornelius, and Madge (or Margaret, this is what gma calls her) So now I have discovered 4, only 7 left :) As to William, I have since posting the prev. message found this... William McConnell Age in 1910: 44 Estimated birth year: abt 1866 Birthplace: New Jersey Relation to Head of House: Head Father's Birth Place: New Jersey Mother's Birth Place: New Jersey Spouse's name: Jesse Home in 1910: Gloucester City Ward 2, Camden, New Jersey Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age William McConnell 44 Jesse McConnell 34 Madge McConnell 7 Cornelius McConnell 4 On ancestry.com So that puts Willima being born about 1866, and I know he was alive in 1916 as this is when Gma was born. I have this info from the above Census..... It says...How many children were born? 6 Number Now living 2. so by 1910 she had had 4 children die...and still 4 more will...Gma said she had a total of 11 children. and Charles falls into the "4 more to go" They had been married for 10 years in 1910 Jesse and William were born in NJ Jesse's parents are from Mom: Deleware Dad: Pennsylvania Williams parents were both born in NJ They rented a house Jesse, William, and Madge could read and write, and Madge was in school and also Madge and Neil were born in Pennsylvania Thanks soo very much for your insight and help. I don't think that I am related to your McConnell family, but I was researching McConnell deaths in NJ for 1912 and found a birth certificate for an infant brother of your grandmother. I will e-mail it directly to you. You'll notice that your great-grandfather was born in Lambertville, which is in Hunterdon County. I think that may be a good clue for you. Now I have a question. You said were looking for William McConnell circa 1880s. Is that when you have trouble tracking him, or maybe when you think he was born? Or was he about the same age as his wife, or older? Do you have any idea when he died? Kirsten in MD Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
