Happy about the recent postings about McConnells. Anyone out there ever heard of a MATTHEW MCCONNELL, b. 1801 in Ohio, married 1) Jane Richey, died 1844, Ohio and 2) Margaret Stephenson ? The family left Ohio and came to Monroe Co., Indiana, where MATTHEW MCCONNELL died 27 March 1872. I believe his family probably came through Pennsylvania, also, they were thought to be Presbyterians by faith. Thanks and hope to hear from someone...Mobie McCammon

John Elder McConnell was married to Hannah who was daughter of William Elder, whose father John Elder(b-1755 and emigrated from N Ireland about 1802 to Slipery Rock Twnp Mercer County, Pa.), whose father was Thomas Elder. I have about 30 other names of kin and marriage partners. The 4th generation John Elder (B 9-2-1820)was a partner with Michael Jordan in a store in Harlensberg, Pa. Michael Jordan is the brother of Henry Jordan Jr. Henry's granddaughter married William Carlon McConnell. The families lived on adjacent farms. Another cross tie is that Dorcas Wilken (B 1821) married William Elder and their daughter Hannah married John Elder McConnell. The Wilkens family were married into the Harlan, Orr, and Water families. My grandmother Belma Lockwood Waters (Nov 23,1888) maried John William McConnell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was very excited by the last batch of emails on the McConnell's of Lawrence County, Pa. The names in the newspaper articles were the family names of neighbors and friends. Unfortunately I couldn't tie anyone into my various lines. The McConnell's that you mentioned were in the same locations as my family members so there is probably some tie-in. My best guess is that we need to go back a generation to find that connection. My McConnell ancestors are Denis & Bridget McConnel who had 2 sons that I know about James and John and 6 daughters Nancy, Elizabeth, Margaret, Rosanna, Catherine, and Rebecca).. My Line stems from James and is well documented. I only have a partial history of John's line. John and Sarah McConnell had at least 4 children James, Sarah, Alexander, & Ann. All were born from 1807 to 1814. That is about all I know of that side of the family. Family verbal history says that there are another dozen brothers to James and John with which we have lost touch. The 1800 census tells us that a William McConnel lived close to Dennis and may have been an older son, but that would only be conjecture. Other family names in the area, with whom the McConnell's share ties are Jordan, Clark, Daniels, Elder, Johnston, Orr, Ramsey, Sankey, Falls, Young, Campbell, Kinsey, Carlon, Graham, Drake, & Swartz. I would be curious to know if you think if there is any overlap in the lines. I'm aware of McConnells in northern New Jersey as I actually live in Sussex County, but this is the first that I've heard of a Mary and Hugh in Orange County. I've been trying to find a fit with the New Castle, DE, clan because one census indicated a connection there. But I'll definitely look into Orange County. This family did seem to travel a lot, although my husband's grandmother mentioned the railroad as their occupation and not boats. James' wife was named Abigail and seems to have been born in Pennsylvania. I don't know her maiden name but an unsubstantiated source in Family Seach claims that it's Westbrook. And there happen to have been Westbrooks in the Sussex County area as well. If I can help you with finding things in northern New Jersey let me know! Utter is a somewhat unusual name that I see in northwestern NJ (Sussex and Passaic Counties) and neighboring Orange County, NY. I know of at least one McConnell - Utter marriage there. I don't see how this Eliza ties in with those folks, but I wonder if her McConnell family and the undertaker's Utter family were from the same area.
