I'd like to encourage the two of you to consider participation by Robert in the Clan Donald DNA Project, which uses Y chromosome DNA test results to shed light on the ancestry of men with reasons to suspect that their surname line is a Clan Donald line. Most of the 525 men already on the tables for this project have names that are considered variants of the name MacDonald. The group includes 21 McConnell men, 3 MacConnell men, and many others with variants such as McDonald, MacDonald, McDaniel, and McDonnell. The project has an outstanding website to help participants and their families understand their results. You can learn more about the project on the project website at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/. You might also check out posts that I have made to the McConnell board concerning the project during the last year. Please help to confirm that Hannah was the Mother's name as I have not been able to confirm yet whether it was Hannah Vargo or Covert. I believe someone else had some data on this but don't know how to confirm yet. Elias was born Aug 19 1810 as you probably already know. I do show Alphaeus born about 1816. Most were probably farmers. Someone was probably a shoe maker or shoe sales person. At this moment I do not know who. The rumor I heard long ago was that Jonathon Jock was one of perhaps 3 British loyalist brothers who may have left the USA for Canada. I do not know the brothers, sisters or parents of Jonathon. I believe I have heard someone claim to know Hannah or the mother's parents, but I cannot confirm as I have not yet documented it. My Father, now deceased, and my Mother, went on a vacation trip through Canada long ago to meet relatives and work on their family tree (my Father's tree for this trip). They talked to many and I don't believe they got any further than what you see here about Elias, Jonathon, but we have other McConnell relatives you can probably get from either www.ancestry.com or www.rootsweb.com. Of Elias family, I believe all stayed in Canada except Herbert McConnell, who married, first, Jean Isabel Bremner, and later my step Grandmother, Cora Clara "Jauncey" or Johnsie or Johnston (who never had any of her own real children) but the whole family loved her.Herbert and Jean came down into Michigan. He was a pastor for many years mostly in Congregational Churches and many of those last years in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, in which my parents were born. My Father now deceased, Russell Hicks McConnell, married Beatrice Martin. Russell was also a Pastor or church association head for many years. My Mother is still living in Grand Rapids at 97 years old. I have not been real active recently especially in the McConnell line because it has not produced further results for me. Even in my Mother's lines I have not been active as I have many, many in her lines compared to my Father's lines. I have a sister named Ruth living in Anchorage, Alaska. I suggest you tell me more about your family and use my e mail address robertmmcconnell@earthlink.net to expedite matters. Check out the two websites mentioned as they probably have much of the data for the McConnell lines that I know. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I descended from his son Alpheus, born in 1816. I also have no info on Jonathan or Hannah, although I have gleaned some from this site. Jonathan and Hannah had 10 children, the earliest being Jeremiah who was born in 1807 and the last being Matilda born in 1833. Elias is listed as being born in 1811, but obviously your date is more secure. The 1811 date may have been figured out from a census, and then it always depends at what time of the year the census was recorded to get the dates correct, if you know what I mean. I believe Rawdon Township was settled around 1820 with Empire Loyalists, so that he was a British sympathesizer makes sense. It sounds like you descend from Elias. Pretty neat to be able to talk to a relative. I have made similar posts on some of the boards for some of the most common McDonald surname variants, but I'm sure that I have missed some of the boards for some of the less common Clan Donald names, including both variants of the name McDonald and names that are not variants of the name McDonald, but are linked to the MacDonald/McDonald clan. If you have matches or near matches with one of these surnames, or are generally interested in informing men eligible to join the project about their opportunities for joining, you may want to make one or more similar posts to appropriate surname boards and lists, and perhaps also to appropriate geographical area boards and mailing lists. 1. [McConnell] Joining the Clan Donald DNA Project with results from the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation or elsewhere
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ksaxe Surnames: Donaldson, McDaniel, McDonald, MacDonald, McDonnell, McConnell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/2490/mb.ashx Message Board Post: How and why to join The Clan Donald DNA project is a Y chromosome DNA project dedicated to helping men from Clan Donald male lines learn more about those lines. Men with Clan Donald surnames including Donaldson, McDaniel, McDonald, MacDonald, McDonnell, and McConnell are encouraged to join. Although most men joining the project have been tested through Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), men tested elsewhere are also welcome to join the project. Because Clan Donald USA has its own website for the project, project webmaster Doug McDonald has been able to customize the project website to display results for men tested at different labs. The sets of markers tested by various labs overlap, but are not identical, and Doug has been able to display results for the markers tested by each of the labs. You can see the project results tables for yourself at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/tables.htm. Currently, there are 2 Donaldson men with Y chromosome test results in the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) database. These men are eligible to join the Clan Donald DNA Project by contacting Doug McDonald. To add participants to the project, Doug needs their permission, contact information, and enough information about their pedigree file in the Sorenson database to positively identify their test results. Following a recent inquiry from a MacDonald wishing to join the project using his SMGF test results, I began extracting the test results for MacDonald and McDonald men from the Sorenson database, and moved on to extract results for men with other surnames that are or can be variants of the surname MacDonald. Because the name Donaldson was sometimes adopted by McDonald men, I did include the Donaldson results in my extraction efforts. So if either of these men does not have his results extracted already, I can help. Although the results for the Donaldson men in the SMGF database show that they are not at all closely related, each has some matches or near matches in the Clan Donald DNA Project. Results for one man who descends from a Humphrey Donaldson who was born in Pennsylvania in 1740 and died in North Caroline in 1781 match results for men in a project grouping called the R1b Green subgroup. This group of men has been linked to the famed Niall of the Nine Hostages. Niall and his male line relatives have been amazingly prolific, and men in this group find that they have many cousins. Another, who descends from a Walter Donaldson born in Northumberland County, England, which borders Scotland, would probably be classified as a member of a catch-all group called the R1b Yellow Group. The surnames of his closer matches within the project, Mac Donald, McDonald, and MacDonald, and the distance of the matches suggest that they may share a common ancestor who lived around the time that su! rnames were adopted in many areas, but it is also possible that a common ancestor lived more recently than that. By joining the project, these men would be helping themselves and other project members. One of the most obvious benefits would be having their results posted on the project results tables, making it easy for these men and their matches to find each other. By creating an entry for their test results at www.ysearch.org and notifying Doug of their Ysearch ID code, they can get a link to their Ysearch entry placed on the project tables, enabling matches who find them on the tables to easily navigate to their Ysearch entry and contact them through Ysearch. Use of Ysearch is recommended for all men with Y test results, but it is especially important for men who have tested outside FTDNA. A very large number of men with McDonald variant surnames has been tested at FTDNA through the Clan Donald Project and some others have been tested elsewhere, and they may not all know about the SMGF database. Most will at least be aware of the existence of Ysearch and will know about the proj! ect tables. So the chances of making contact with genetic matches will be greatly improved by creating a Ysearch entry and asking Doug to include one's Ysearch ID on the project tables. There are some differences in how different organizations report test results, and this can cause some confusion for people entering their data on Ysearch, but I have been through this process myself and am willing and able to answer questions and to help anyone in need of assistance.* Another lesser-known benefit of joining the project is having one's results posted to something called a relationship tree, or cladogram. The project is very fortunate to have Doug, a professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois, as a co-administrator. His research interests and skills overlap with genetic genealogy, and the relationship trees that he has been able to develop are very interesting and helpful. These trees are constructed based on the assumption that a minimal number of mutations has occurred among the lines of the men in the project, and show the most likely relationships between them based on recent data. In most cases, they should give a better idea of the relatedness of the men on the tables than one on one comparisons alone. Doug has developed trees for men with results for FTDNA's sets of 25, 37, and 67 markers. Because the set of markers used by the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation includes all of the markers in the 25 marker set used ! by FTDNA, men with results for all of the SMGF markers who join the project will be able to see where they fall on the 25 marker tree for their haplogroup, if there is one. The vast majority of men testing will be in one of the haplogroups (I1a, I1c, R1a, and R1b) for which Doug has developed trees and would be placed on one of them. Because the SMGF database is unique, I decided to focus this post on joining the project using SMGF results. If you were tested by another organization, you can still join the project by contacting Doug, but the process will be a little different. You can find contact information for Doug McDonald at the bottom of the following page on the Clan Donald DNA project website: http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/DNAjoin.htm. If you are considering Y DNA testing for one of your male lines, you may find it helpful to read some posts that I made on some of the available testing options starting early in August. They are on a few different threads, but if you start with the earliest one, you should be able to find most of the others with little trouble. They are all on the McConnell board at http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/mb.ashx Kirsten Saxe, McConnell researcher Creating a Ysearch entry with results from outside FTDNA can be tricky for 2 reasons. Different testing organizations report results for the same man in different ways. For some markers, the numerical values reported will be different, and it's necessary to add or subtract a fixed amount to convert results from one organization to the format used by another. The names used for some markers may also be somewhat different. For instance, the marker FTDNA calls GATAH4 is called GATA H4.1 in the SMGF database, and this is also one of the markers that usually needs to be converted from the format of one lab to the format of another. Once you have your marker names and results straight, you just need to find the right places in the Ysearch entry form to enter the results for each marker. The orders for display of SMGF results using the FTDNA lab standard and for entry into Ysearch are similar, but the ysearch entry form contains many additional markers that one must skip over when entering SMGF results. This is not extremely difficult, but requires some care. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ksaxe Surnames: MacDonald, McDonald, McDaniel, McConnell, Donaldson, Donald, McDonnell, Daniel, Donnell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/2489/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Another genetic genealogy company using the Sorenson Genomics lab One company that I failed to mention in my posts about DNA testing options earlier this year is DNA Heritage. DNA Heritage uses the Sorenson Genomics Laboratory which performs the testing for the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation and DNA Ancestry and previously performed tests for Relative Genetics. The 43 marker test at DNA Heritage uses the same markers tested by the "37" marker test of the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation, the "46" marker test used by DNA Ancestry, and the "43" marker tests used by Relative Genetics. The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) counts multi-copy markers as one single marker, leading to a deceptively low marker count of 37 in their database displays. DNA Ancestry counts 3 multi-copy markers that most men don't even have toward their count of 46. The count of 43 used by Relative Genetics seems the most sensible to me. These 37/43/46 marker tests are all roughly comparable to the 37 marker tests used by Family Tree DNA! (FTDNA). The FTDNA test uses some very fast markers that make it more informative than the Sorenson Genomics lab tests in general, according to some genetic genealogists that have looked at the issue. However, there have been family projects that have found the fast moving markers a little confusing due to the same mutations happening in different lines. So the best marker set may vary from family to family, and there is no way to tell which marker set will be most useful for a particular family until both sets have been used on multiple family members. Many family projects will want to use markers from both sets. Fortunately, there is a lot of overlap in the marker sets. The 37/43/46 marker tests performed by Sorenson Genomics include all of the markers used by FTDNA in their 12 and 25 marker tests, 32 of the markers used in FTDNA's 37 marker test, and 34 of the markers used in FTDNA's 67 marker test. It is relatively easy for FTDNA customers to order individual tests for the Sorenson Genomics markers not in FTDNA's standard tests by using FTDNA's Advanced Orders page, which they can access from their personal page at FTDNA. DNA Heritage has a couple of unique features. One is that they have the lab test the full set of markers even when only partial results have been ordered. This allows them to offer "instant upgrades" if a customer decides to pay for more results later. Another unique feature of DNA Heritage is their option to customize marker sets for family projects. The group administrator can select a subset of the 43 markers to be used as the group's standard test. This might allow some family projects which start out with some knowledge of which markers are most useful to distinguish the branches of their family to realize some savings. It seems possible that some family groups within the Clan Donald DNA project may eventually identify some of the Sorenson Genomics markers as particularly informative for their families as more men are tested through DNA Ancestry, DNA Heritage, and SMGF. If these families find that markers tested by FTDNA only are not especially informative for distinguishing the branches of their family, then the family may benefit from the formation of a project at DNA Heritage using a customized marker set. Some family members could still test with FTDNA or other organizations if desired. The Clan Donald DNA Project is open to men with test results from all testing organizations; those not tested through FTDNA would need to e-mail Doug McDonald or Mark MacDonald to initiate the process of joining the project. I have been making posts to some of the appropriate surname boards for Clan Donald men to let men with McDonald variant surnames know about the option to join the project with results from DNA testing organizations other than FTDNA, and hope that this brings many new members to the project. Lab results from outside FTDNA will not be added to the FTDNA database and so will not appear on FTDNA match pages, so it will be best for project members to check for matches using the project tables and Ysearch regularly to see if they match some of these new project members who were tested outside FTDNA. 1. [McConnell] McConnells in the Clan Donald DNA Project
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ksaxe Surnames: MacConnell, MacDonald, McConnell, McDonald Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/2486/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Results for 20 McConnells Now on the Clan Donald DNA Project Tables Last week I noted the 15-16% growth in the number of men with results posted to the Clan Donald DNA project tables over the preceding four months. For McConnells in the project, the recent growth rate is higher, with the total increasing 33% from 15 men as of the June 5th update to 20 men when K. D. McConnell was added last month. Since last weekend, the relationship trees have been updated again, and K. D. McConnell's results have really changed things around a bit. This is another sign of progress in the project, and I'll say more about it below. For the McConnells with posted results, it is now very simple to compute percentages within various subgroups. These percentages are probably a reasonably good indicator of the probabilities of membership in the various subgroups for McConnell men who may be interested in joining the project, but the percentage of R1b Yellow (unclassified) men may be inflated because some members of that group have recently recruited known cousins to test: 5% are in the Haplogroup I1c (also known as I1b2a) Red subgroup, very possibly in the very old group which is believed to have originated among very early settlers of the British Isles. As the father of seven children, Ray McConnell, the sole McConnell in this group, has had to delay testing to upgrade his results from the 12 markers tested through the Genographic Project for financial reasons. Ray has expressed an interest in further testing down the road. Comparing results with his 5 11 for 12 marker matches on additional markers would really help Ray to assess how closely related he is to these men and others that test in the future. Eventually those 7 kids may start to run out of unique gift ideas for their dad and might find it a good idea to pool their resources for a group gift of further testing that they might all enjoy. 10% are in the R1a Red subgroup of descendants and close relatives of clan founder Somerled. These men have very close matches among other men in the group. One man, Robert C. McConnell, matches a MacDonald on 64 out of 67 markers and has a number of other close matches. Another has results for 12 markers and has 43 12 for 12 matches, including Robert C. McConnell. The success of Somerled and his family in producing male line descendants of Somerled means that men in this group have lots of cousins. Robert C. McConnell is interested in finding known and possible cousins willing to test so that they can compare results. Men in this group may want to use the R1a relationship tree on the project website to help them focus in on the matches most likely to be closely related. 10% of McConnells and 67% of MacConnells, as well as one SMGF study member, are in the R1b Red subgroup related to the kings of the old kingdom of Dalriada. Results for the McConnells and MacConnells indicate a recent common ancestor born about 15 generations ago, with some of the individuals sharing more recent common ancestors. You can see this group near the top of the R1b 37 marker tree, just to the right of the Brown subgroup. Their 4 dots are close together and have the end of a branch to themselves, signifying that the algorithms used by Doug McDonald to create the trees identify them as part of a family group with a recent common ancestor. You can easily identify their dots on the trees using their Clan Donald codes: &MM5AD for J. MacConnell, &DNR9S for F. G. MacConnell, &BOXLP for K. G. G. McConnell, and &76B7L for M. B. McConnell. It is very interesting to me that the tree places M. B. McConnell on the same little branch as K. G. G. McConnell, even though a look! at the TMRCA (generations to most recent common ancestor) column when results are compared to the results of M. B. makes it appear that M. B. is most closely related to J. MacConnell. This arrangement on the tree certainly seems to fit with the use of the two variant spellings among these men. I have not been in touch with these men because they are not on Ysearch, but I wonder if any of them have connecting paper trails. 5% of McConnells, as well as one SMGF study member, are in the R1b Green subgroup related to Niall of the Nine Hostages. Like the men in the group for Somerled descendants, men in this group have large numbers of matches. They may benefit from using the R1b relationship trees to identify men most likely to be related in a genealogical time frame. Upgrading to add results for more markers and recruiting known distant cousins to test should be especially helpful to members of the Green subgroup. Encouraging those with McDonald variant surnames to add results for more markers may also be productive for members of this group. 70% of McConnells and one MacConnell are in the R1b Yellow (unclassified) subgroup. Some of these have significant matches within the group, but so far data from that group is not sufficient to identify subgroups including these McConnell men. This situation may be changing. Some of the close matches among men in this group are between McConnells who had connecting paper trails prior to testing. This gives the researchers in the families of these men a better idea of what their most recent common ancestor's haplotype would have been, and helps them to better determine how they are related to other men in the project. Subgroups including these known cousins may be formed in the not so distant future as other related men are tested. If any of the men already on the table have additional markers tested, this may also help define new subgroups for them. There is another subgroup of men currently within the Yellow group that seems to be taking shape on the R1b 37 marker relationship tree, but it does not involve known McConnell cousins. K. D. McConnell's 37 marker results match 36 for 37 with C. W. McConnell's even though they do not have connecting paper trails. As expected for such a close match, these men are very close on the new 37 marker relationship tree, and with the new information from K. D. McConnell's haplotype, other individuals are now grouped closer to the two men, too. Members of these families have just begun to explore the significance of their match, and at least one of these men (K. D.) is waiting for results on more markers. We will probably hear more from researchers of these families soon. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [McConnell] 500 Men Now on Clan Donald DNA Project Tables, Tables and Trees Updated
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ksaxe Surnames: McConnell, MacDonald, McDonald Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/2485/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Rapid Growth in Project Leads to Results Yesterday Doug McDonald posted results for the 500th man added to the Clan Donald DNA project tables. I believe that this makes the Clan Donald DNA project the first surname project to reach this milestone. The project has been around for some time, and the recent growth of the project has been extremely rapid. I started to write down numbers in June. On June 8, there were results for just 434 men on the project tables, so the project has grown 16% in less than 4 months. Favorable press coverage of DNA genealogy earlier this year has contributed to the success of the project, but the sustained commitment of Mark MacDonald and Doug McDonald to the project made this possible. Last year, the project website was revamped and the project results were made public. This resulted in extremely rapid growth in the project, and Doug has updated the project database many times over the last year. During the last couple of weeks, Doug has again revised the website to reflect the recent growth. Addition of results for new project members to the tables is just a part of this revision. From time to time, I have seen that Doug has reclassified men on the tables, i.e., he has been able to move them from one category to another. Generally the newer category is a smaller, more closely related group than the category to which the man was previously assigned. Last week he was able to do this for a large number of men in the project. The relationship trees have also been updated and there is a lot of change in their branch structure. Many of us have some of the same closest neighbors on the trees as we did before, along with new neighbors who joined the project more recently. However, there are some people whose positions on the new tree relative to many of their old neighbors have changed substantially. For instance, on the old R1b 37 marker tree, D. E. McConnell and J. L. McConnell were on the same branch. On the new tree, they are far apart, and D. E.'s closest McConnell neighbors are C. W., R. H., and M. F. McConnell. The branch for the Green group related to Niall of the Nine Hostages has also shifted substantially. There are trees for 25, 37, and 67 markers, and those of you who are already in the project with results for 25 or more markers will want to find yourselves on the new trees. For me the changes in the trees and the classifications into subgroups are a clear sign that the growth of the project is leading to an increased understanding of the relatedness of project members. This process will continue as more men join the project. Kit counts for the Clan Donald project and some of the surname variants associated with it indicate that this rapid growth is continuing, accelerating the growth of the project. Thanks go to Doug and Mark, whose hard work and dedication have made the success of this project possible. You can explore the project website at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/DNAmain.htm. Next time: McConnells in the Clan Donald DNA project. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
