    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ksaxe Surnames: McConnell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/2471.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm very glad to hear from you. When I look for your Michigan-Canada-New York results in the Sorenson database, I find that they are incomplete, and it may also be that you have more results for Sorenson markers that are not in the FTDNA 67 marker set than for Sorenson markers that are in the FTDNA 67 marker set. So you should not be getting matches for most of your FTDNA results using the online SMGF database, because most of your Sorenson results haven't been posted to the SMGF database yet. Some people are getting their SMGF results through a company called Genetree. If this is the case with you, then I guess you might have more results reported by Genetree than have been uploaded to the SMGF database. If you believe that you have results from Genetree, please be careful about that. Some of the posts that I have seen on the Genealogy-DNA list make me wonder if they have their act together yet (they're new to this) and even if there may be con artists pretending to be Genetree. Another thing to be careful about when comparing your FTDNA and SMGF results is that the 2 organizations report results differently. If you want to compare your FTDNA results with your SMGF results, you can enter the values as reported by FTDNA, but you have to be careful to do 2 things. One is to choose the FTDNA lab standard on the SMGF database search page, so that SMGF is not comparing apples and oranges. Another thing you have to be careful about is the order for entry of results on the SMGF search page. It starts out the same as the order used by FTDNA, but it deviates when you get a little more than halfway down the 3rd column on the SMGF search page. If you want me to, I can take a look at how your results from the two organizations compare. Are your results posted on the Clan Donald DNA Project tables or on ysearch? I believe there are 4 now. But I have a problem with the Sorensen results... they do not match at all (ok 3 matches out of , like 40 ... I did the 67 test) the FTDNA test. I'm contacting Sorenson with this 'minor' problem. My mtDNA tests with Sorenson line up perfectly with FTDNA... so one of them is in obvious error. Author: ksaxe Surnames: McConnell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/183.713.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Diane, I was thinking about your grandchildren doing family tree assignments at school. Hopefully they are not too old to have done all of those already. Of course it will be hard for you to help much if they are too busy to spend much time on those assignments. You are right that there is a lot of concern about privacy and DNA results. For some kinds of DNA testing, there is the possibility of uncovering medically relevant information, so people have worried about this information being available to health insurance companies. My understanding is that laws in all or most of the states protect people against this theoretical possibility, and there is national legislation before Congress to do the same thing. Even without such legislation, Y chromosome DNA testing seldom uncovers any hint of medical problems. The only such problems that I am aware of are infertility problems, and even if a man has those sorts of problems, it's very unlikely that this would be clear from their Y chromosome test results. I think it would take a missing segment of DNA on a man's Y chromosome to give a clear signal of such a problem. If this lead to a null result for one of the markers tested, then I think the testing company would contact the individual to explain the possible medical implications so that the man could make informed decisions about sharing his results with others, including his physician. The bottom line is that even if it were legal for insurance companies to use DNA test results to help set rates, there isn't enough medically relevant information in Y chromosome test results to make it worth the expense of examining results. People who order complete mitochondrial DNA testing do need to be aware that mutations in the coding region can have a medical significance, and they need to do some research, or have somebody else do some research, before they share their coding region test results. The standard tests for the HVR 1, HVR 2, and HVR 3 regions don't include the coding region, so it's OK to share results from those freely. As far as I know, FTDNA is the only company to offer a complete mitochondrial DNA test, and they don't publish coding region results in public databases, but they do offer a matching service, so that only matches learn of their matching results. Of course there is an option to opt out of the matching service. I think that the situation with autosomal DNA testing is more complicated, and people interested in that sort of testing may want to ask some questions. They can ask testing companies and this would be a good subject for the Genealogy-DNA list here on Rootsweb. You mentioned how many people share DNA. This will depend on the family. Male line relatives will share identical or nearly identical Y chromosome results if tested. How many matches men will find in DNA databases depends on a number of factors. If their male line has done well long-term, then they will have many distant cousins. There will be some matches with distant cousins who have experienced some of the same mutations since the common ancestor. There is also the randomness due to men's being aware of DNA testing options or not, their ability to afford testing, and their interest in testing. Some men are finding hundreds of DNA matches, while others are finding few or even none. Of course, the number of men with no matches is very small, and the chances of finding matches keep increasing as the databases grow. In the Clan Donald DNA Project, many of the matches between McConnells occur within large family groups with interesting histories, but there are also significant DNA matches for participants who don't have large numbers of matches. Even if your son NEVER comes around, some of his descendants will appreciate your work. Remember, too, that nearly all kids will receive some sort of family tree assignment from school sometime during their childhood. You will probably get a chance to help with that. Thank you for trying to recruit your son for the project. I am optimistic that somebody from the line of your Joseph McConnell will be found to join the project sooner or later. Already we have about twice as many McConnells on the project tables as we did a year ago, and more results will be coming from the lab very soon. Author: ksaxe Surnames: Beatty, McConnell, McDonald Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mcconnell/183.712.1.1.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Colleen. Somebody recommended your book to me in the past, but I'm not sure that I ever managed to get in touch with you. Where to begin about the Clan Donald DNA Project? It is one of the oldest genetic genealogy projects, and now has 569 men on the project tables. Most, but not all of those men have surnames that are variants of the name MacDonald. DNA results prove that these men are from a number of different family groups that took MacDonald variant surnames. The project has the most informative website I have seen for any genetic genealogy project. It can take a while to figure out what the results mean as one learns about genetic genealogy, because there is a lot to learn. The project webmaster is Doug McDonald, and he is able to sort men into related family groups. Their test results are listed on the project results tables, and there are also some diagrams called network charts, which are computer generated family trees of sorts. Generally, the DNA technology is very good at determining whether two men are closely related in their all male line. One of the tested Lancaster County McConnells traces his line back to Alexander or within a generation or so of Alexander. Another traces his back to David born around 1792. They have a very close match, so now they know for certain that their families are related. Another descendant of David recently began testing, and his nearly complete results match the first descendant of David's results. There is a McDonald who traces his line to Wilmington, Delaware, which is only about 30 miles from Philadelphia. You probably know that both cities are on the Delaware River. His results also match those of the others extremely closely, and he reports that an ancestor used the name McConnell when he was in the military. There are other interesting matches. One is with a Mack. For this researcher's family, finding the McDonald and McConnell matches seems to tell us that ! their family name was originally MacDonald or a variant. There are other matches, including one with a French Canadian McDonald. This family has more distant matches with families tracing their line to Dumfriesshire. One of those families is a Beatty family. The degree of match is about what you would expect for a family sharing common ancestry shortly before the adoption of surnames. If any male McConnell with a solid line back to Alexander or one of his male line relatives in Dumfriesshire could be found and tested, this would really help solidify the family connection. It's hard to explain this project and how much has been learned from it, so I will give you a link to the project website and ask you to check it out and ask any questions that come to mind. The site has several pages to explore. The top page is at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/. I am interested in your book, but you should give priority to anybody who traces their line to your McConnell family. My Dennis born about 1802 was not closely related to the tested Lancaster County McConnell family members. The reason I suspect he is from Pa. is that his wife, Mary McCurdy, daughter of John McCurdy Jr. and Mary Fox, was born in Philadelphia (I have no proof on any of this). Their children were: Nancy; Elizabeth; John; Mary; William; James; Sara; Joseph; Joshua. So not much of a clue in their names. I have a fairly solid line of descent to my late husband, and no, I cannot talk my son into taking the DNA test, even if I pay for it! Maybe later... but he was only 3 1/2 when his father was killed and my husband adopted him, and his sister (she was just 6 mos), and he is the only father they have ever known... so I think this is somehow tied into it, although I have continually reminded him since he was a baby that he IS a McConnell. Maybe when he's older... So, I am trying to build their family tree for them - someday they will be happy to have it. Thanks...
