Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3kz.2ACIB/650.1.2.2.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: The 1900 census shows Walice stationed at Capiz, Panay Island, in the Philippines. He's single, home address 1216 13th St., Beaver Falls PA. He's shown as born in PA of parents born in PA. Back at Beaver Falls that year his brother George McClain, b Aug 1870, is listed as head of a household consisting of himself, sister Sadie (Sarah) b May 1867, brother Dick b Apr 1875, and sister Lizzie b Jun 1878. These four are shown as b PA of parents b Ohio. There's no indication their father was an immigrant. According to the 1880 census, Walice (listed as Wallace D.) had a brother named Harry, then aged 1 yr, or born around 1879. The 1900 census shows Harry McClain, b Mar 1878 PA PA PA, wife Viola and daughter (Gladys) b May 1900, at 620 13th St., Beaver Falls. The name of the head of the household next door to Harry is blotched. It looks to me like R. G. McClain, b Oct 1831, age 68, b PA, father b Ireland, mother b PA, day laborer. R. G.'s wife's name is listed as Susan, b May 1843, age 57, married 40 yrs, 9 children, 6 living. She and her parents all b PA. Since census records are sometimes very wrong on names and ages, it's not at all impossible that this couple is the same couple shown as Robert and Mary J. on the 1880. Being next door to Harry, who appears to be the same Harry who was Wallace's brother on the 1880, "R. G." and "Susan" may be Harry's parents (or maybe R.G. is an uncle). If R.G. is Robert, father of Harry, then it would follow that he's Walice's fath! er, too. The indications are that your Robert McClain was born in this country in the 1830's, so there's reason to expect eventually to find him in the 1850-60-70 censuses, possibly in OH, WV or PA. The birthplaces of his children on the 1880 census suggest he would have been living in PA in 1870. If you've only seen the 1880 census listing for Robert's household in transcription form, you should make a point of checking the original on microfilm, to see if the ages are copied correctly, and to see what other clues may be there that do not show up in the transcription. County records in Lawrence and Beaver Counties should be searched for the name McClain (and all variant spellings of the name).
