The earliest one I have is Martin Shoemaker who is first recorded on the military lists of Orange Co., VA. His part of Orange Co became Augusta Co, and then Rockingham. Family notes do not cite a specific religion, but they do say that Martin probably belonged to one of the "strict German churches." One of his descendants was known to be of the Dunkard sect. The Shoemakers stayed around the Shenandoah and some moved on to what is now West Virginia. My husband's David came to Ross Co, Ohio, after his marriage. Do you have any idea where in PA your McClains were from? I have a possibility with Robert of Fayette Co. There is a Robt. McClain in that county, unknown twp, in the 1790 census. He has 2 males 16 and older, 3 males under 15 and 6 females in his household. Robert would be one of the males over 16 and his wife one of the females. Your Samuel could be one of the under 16 males and our Mary another of the females. In the 1800 census, a Robert McClain appears in Fayette Co, German township, with 2 males age 0-10; 2 males age 10-16; 1 male 16-26;1 male 45 or older; 1 female age 0-10; 1 female age 16-26; 1 female 45 or older; and 2 extra people. Could be the same family. I find NO other record of Robt. McClain except for the fact that he signed for Mary's marriage to David Shoemaker in Rockingham Co. in 1803. After that, he is history! I know David and Mary removed eventually to Ross Co, OH, but cannot find Robt. there. If your Samuel married late, he may possibly be the Ross Co. Samuel McClain who married Eliza C. Robinson on 21 Jan 1838. Kathy
