Surnames: McClain, McLeane, McLean, McLaine, McLain, McClaine Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3kz.2ACIB/1042 Message Board Post: Born abt 1800 NC, Married Isabella Elizabeth (Isabel) (abt 1806 NC), abt 1820 Kentucky. There first 4 children were born in KY, Rachel M (1821), William H (1823), Adison (1825), Mary (22 March 1827). After March 1827 & before January 1830, Charles moved his family to Taney Co, MO, later to become Stone Co, MO. Their last 2 children, Elizabeth (5 Jan 1830) and Joseph (1833, Stone Co.,MO) were born. After this I can’t find any mention on Charles again. I can’t find them on any of the cenus to date either under the name McClain. I know Isabella remarried William Gilmore Goff on Aug 9, 1840 in Green Co., MO & had 3 more children with him, Sarah Samantha, William George & John Wesley. So Charles had to have died before 1840. I have been looking just for the McClain name so far because on Isabella’s marriage cert to William Gilmore , it has her listed as Isabella McClain & on all the census that I have found her & Charles children it has them as McClain. But I am wondering if the name didn’t start out as McLean, McLain, McLaine, McLeane instead & was converted to McClain later. I got the birth info from Edith Woodard several years ago but haven’t been able to contact her since to find out where she obtained Charles birth abt 1806 in NC. I am now wondering if he couldn’t have been born in SC or KY ? Does any of this come close to anyones Charles in their family? Whether it be McClain, McLean, McLeane or McLain? If anyone can help shed some light on Charles or even where the McClain name came from would be very helpful. Thank you Lisa
