The point briefly touched on about standardization is important. A friend named McConnochie related that fifteen of the clan were hanged by the British around 1700. They spelled their names 11 different ways. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Audrey Stanaland" <audstan@chartertn.net> To: <McClain-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 30, 2003 12:45 PM Subject: Re: [McClain] Re: McClain-D Digest V03 #117 > Sean, > Re spelling of "McLain" surname . . . maybe you've already discovered this, > but so far in my research on my Charles McLain line, I have found the > surname spelling is not consistent for the family. Sean, Re spelling of "McLain" surname . . . maybe you've already discovered this, but so far in my research on my Charles McLain line, I have found the surname spelling is not consistent for the family. Other researchers have the same experience. For instance, maybe your family finally settled on a spelling as time went by (perhaps due to standardization of spellings for official reporting, gov't, etc.) but earlier spellings will probably vary from McClain, to McClane, or McLane, McLain, McLaine, McClanes, etc. so stay flexible in your searches. This has also been my experience for my Andrews family: Andrews, Andrus, Andres, Anders and even Adams has shown up on census records or land records. The last in the family line to carry the name, my great-great grandmother Parthenia, used ANDERS after the family settled in Arkansas. As I go back beyond the ANDREWS spelling that shows up in North Carolina and Georgia, who knows how I'll find the name spelled! For sure, name spellings on records "across the pond" in Europe, etc. were not consistent. I'm told by some German relatives still in Germany that in times past, it was seen as a mark of a learned man/woman to be able to write in beautiful script and spell a name in several ways---hence our RIQUIER line in Germany has shown up as RIQUIR and RIQUER. Our WILLMS line has been seen as WILMS, WILLEMS, etc. and in the USA, they named their children WILLIAMS but the parents continued to use WILLMS. Gets very confusing doesn't it. Good luck! John Macklane left a will in Prince George's Co MD around 1766, Liber 1, page 581. Does anyone have a copy of this will they could scan and send me, or the text (or abstract) that they could post to this list? Andy Anderson

Does anyone know how the Plummers, Bealls and McClains of Prince George's Co or Frederick Co MD in the 1700's may have been interconnected by marriage? What is the basis for the claim by some researchers that Mary Beall was the name of the wife of William McClain, who died in 1794 in Frederick County? Samuel and George Plummer ("Plumer")and John Beall witnessed the 1770 Frederick Co will of James McClane. The will mentioned his widow, Dorcas, and nieces Sarah and Linna Beech. James bequeathed "lands on the south side of...Bennet's Creek" to his brother William, and after William's death to William's son James Joshua McClain. This will, as copied into the will book, is consistent in spelling James' and Dorcas' name in each instance as McClane and William and James Joshua's name as McClain. In 1794 in Frederick Co James Plummer and Edward "Andrew" witnessed the will of William McClain, James' brother. William left no widow. His will, proved 12 Apr 1794, mentions son Joshua and daughters Mary, Polly and Susanna. A land record, presumably for this William McClain (who usually signed with a W), names wife Mary. Joshua McClain married Elizabeth Bennett.
