Our family line seems to have settled on the spelling "McLAIN" but records from 1850 on show it spelled any number of ways, including McCLAINE and McLANE, so any other branches (perhaps a brother or cousin's line) might have ended up with McCLAIN. I'm curious about your posting, mainly because of the Arkansas connection, and your John H. McCLAIN. Any hint where your McCLAIN family lived before coming to Rogers, AR ? My McLAIN family migrated from somewhere in TN before settling in eastern Arkansas in Lawrence County area near Walnut Ridge---somewhere between 1842-1850. Last child born in Tennessee in 1842. I have not yet been able to trace any farther back than . . . . . Charles McLAIN, b about 1805, I think in North Carolina (looks like that on 1850 census for ARK) Perlina "Unknown" was his wife, who died before 1860 in Arkansas and Charles married a Sarah RILY/RILEY sometime after that, but they had no children of which I am aware. Children of Charles McLAIN, a farmer, and Perlina . . . CHRISTIANA, about 1832, TN (mar JAMES SMITH in AR) 1870 census DAVID, about 1834, TN--(mar SUSAN MULEN,1855,AR) David died before 1869 as in some Lawrence County loose probate records found by another researcher, Susan married William FLETCHER and she and her child Mary (by David) named in probate records. Child Mary A. born to David and Susan. **JOHN HENRY, about 1837, TN (my g-g- grdftf, died 1880, Lawrence Co. married 1857, ARK, to SARAH CATHERINE AGEE, b about 1842, ESQUIRE "SQUIRE", b about 1842 in TN, mar. M.CAROLINE "Unknown"--not sure yet how many children they had. WILLIAM CALIFORNIA, b Nov. 1853, Lawrence Co, Walnut Ridge. 2nd mar. to NANCY SAPHRONIA MEAD. (He died 1912,(obit) Newport,Jackson,AR, was a mailcarrier.Buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Newport, AR.) William California had a large family---so there's another line of McLAIN. ---------------- **Children of John Henry and Sarah Catherine: ***WILLIAM DAVID,b 1859, Walnut Ridge, ARK, my g-grandfather died 1921. I have his obit from the Newport Daily Independent and have accumulated a good bit of info on him. CHARLES L., b about 1863, AR (not sure yet about his line, marriages, children) RUTH A., b about 1865, AR JOHN M., b about 1868 (buried Walnut Grove Cem., Newport, AR) He married Elsie and adopted a son they named John. --------- ***William David married first wife Cordelia MOSIER, in Lawrence County. Cordelia died 1897, and in 1898, William David married my great-grandmother Clara COOPER (b 1878, Brinkley, Monroe, ARK to Dillard L. COOPER and Parthenia ANDREWS/ANDERS HOUSE HOLLEMAN/HOLMAN--all her previous husbands died) William David and Clara settled in Jackson County near Newport and finally right in Newport, ARK. He owned a sawmill and by 1906 was in business with a son-in-law John Robert HOLDEN (McLAIN-HOLDEN Land and Lumber Company). He served as County Judge from 1914-1919 in Jackson County and owned the McLAIN Hotel in Newport---and also the Hazel Hotel I think---some confusion here based on some newpaper articles I found, as well as some old letters I have. Clara and W.D.raised a large family of their own (they are my mother's grandparents), plus Cordelia's daughters Elizabeth Lettie and Elva, in Newport--and I know this line well. Maybe your line could go back to one of Charles' sons . . .? The oldest photo that I have is of William David McLAIN, born 1859, Walnut Ridge, ARK and died Oct., 1921, Newport, Jackson, ARK.
