But I believe that Rebecca and Margaret may be the same person and as of yet no one has been able to give me any info on who Margaret was or who her parents were - or even where they got her name. That is why I am asking for info from anyone that may have info on these people - so I can determine if they are the same person or in fact different people. Thanks for you input.

Multiple marriages between families, not only brothers and sisters but cousins, were quite common. Also there was a practice, maybe more German than Scottish, of naming children after one's siblings. So there might have been two William McClains, cousins, marrying the two Moorhead girls.

They likely were in Armstrong County, PA in 1834-1840. 2 sons, Moses and Joseph were born in PA in 1842 and 1845. Eventually the family moved to Texas. Rebecca is the daughter of John Moorhead and Margaret Wishard of Armstrong County, PA. She is listed in her fathers will (written in 1834) as Rebecca McClane. I believe William may be the son of Moses McClain of Armstrong County, PA. 2 researchers list his son William as being married to Margaret Morehead but I'm not sure where they got the name Margaret. Any info would be helpful!

    3. Mary, Re your Message Board postings of McCLAIN and COOPER: where you state . . . . --------------------- <<<I am related to the Cooper line this way. Hugh-Capt Robert Cooper-Col Robert Cooper-Mary Melvina Cooper Kilpatrick Williams-Amelia Velina Elizabeth Kilpatrick McClain. John Turley McClain-Robert McClain. I was born and raised in Maury Co., Tn. I am also related to the Coopers on my maternal grandmother's side. Like this. Teresa Patton Cooper Hunt-Fountain D. Hunt-Nancy Elizabeth Hunt Kennedy-Allie Mai Kennedy McClain-Robert M. McClain-me. 6 pages are missing out of my Cooper Book so I can not at this time tell you for sure who Teresa Patton Cooper Hunts' parents were but I believe they were Hugh Cooper the son of Hugh Cooper of Fishing Creek South Carolina.. . .. etc. . . . . . . have pictures of most of the graves at McClain Cemetry where Robert M. Cooper and wife are buried. Mary Bob McClain Richardson>>> ---------------- Mary, We've corresponded in the past, but I want to talk to you some more . . . . Let me begin with what I know: Charles McLAIN, b about 1804 to UNKNOWN parents, North Carolina or possibly Illinois Married Perlina UNKNOWN, b 1811, TN **Lived in TN from at least 1830 to 1842 having most of their children: Charles with wife Perlina in Arkansas by 1850 census--Lawrence Co. Christianna / Christeny, etc., b 1830/32,TN David, b 1834, TN John Henry, b 1837, TN Esquire "Squire", b 1842,TN and William California, b 1853, Arkansas Matthew COOPER and wife Elizabeth (have more info on this line, but will begin here) had a son: Benson G. COOPER, b 1813, Spartenburg, South Carolina married Delphia LINDSEY/ LINDSAY, b 1812 SC (or perhaps GA) **Lived in Spartenburg, South Carolina, until at least 1845, having most of their children: They were in Arkansas by 1850 census--St. Francis, Co. ARK Cordelia, b 1833, SC Julia E., b 1836, SC Dillard L., b 1838, SC John W., b 1843, SC Emelita, b 1846, Arkansas Benson H., b 1850, Arkansas I know that my Michael ANDREWS / Parthenia PULLEN / PULLIN line were in Georgia until at least 1855-56 and were Arkansas by 1856-57---(re children born) and on 1860 Census, Mornoe County, ARK. I know that in 1876, my great-great grandmother Parthenia ANDREWS,(daughter of above Michael) married Geo. HOUSE, in GA 1851, married E. HOLEMAN in ARK, year? after 1860, who died 1873 (bible record), married Dillard L. COOPER, 1876. And that a daughter by COOPER (Clara, b 1878, ARK) married William David McLAIN, b 1859, Lawrence Co., ARK--of the above McLAIN family---a son of John Henry, b 1837, TN. Little clues from other researchers point to my McLAINS as having come from NC to ARK via KY,IL and west TN-- I have a feeling that there was a loose family alliance of my McLAIN family with the COOPER family---and also some of the ANDREWS / ANDERS---that at some point their paths crossed--just can't prove it. Might have just been a relationship that grew out of the Civil War. I know that my McLAINs lived in Tennessee- (Maybe Henry / Weakley County--and Maury isn't that far away)--from at least circa 1830, maybe earlier, until at least 1842-43. I don't know what happend to Charles and Perlina McLAIN 1842 to 1853, but they were in Ark. in 1853 for the birth of their son, Wm. California McLAIN. (Maybe they or just Charles went to California for awhile ? --re son Wm. "California" and came back in 1853? or maybe they were in ARK all that time). I know that about the same time--(in SC 1843, in ARK 1846), some of my COOPER clan from South Carolina settled a few counties south in St. Francis Co. / Monroe Co., ARK and as time went by, all these folks spread out to surrounding ARK. counties and/or moved on west. I have not yet seen a Hugh COOPER that you mention in this line---but I'm going to go back and take a look--see if one appears in any side line. My COOPERs likely lived elsewhere before they settled in South Carolina--tho I don't have any info yet---but Virginia is a possibility . . . I would need to talk to other COOPER researchers who put together the info on my line. **The only daughter born to the union of Dillard L. COOPER and wife Parthenia ANDREWS/ANDERS HOUSE HOLMAN was my great grandmother Clara, b 1878, Brinkley, Monroe, ARK. After Dillard died in 1884, Parthenia and her daughter Clara helped care for the children of a William David McLAIN, from Lawrence County, ARK. married to a Cordelia MOSIER who died in 1897. In 1898, Clara COOPER married this William David McLAIN of Lawrence County--my great grandfather. I have to ask myself if Parthenia's family had any relationship with the McLAINs----in those days people didn't often marry total strangers. Of course, the Civil War could have created friendships as people fought together. Please let me hear from you---if you think your COOPER line might trace to any of the same family---Matthew COOPER to Benson G. COOPER Or if you find any trace of a Charles McLAIN and wife Perlina with their children as above, in your area of Tennessee. Thanks . . 3. Interested in your posting, re McLain in Logan County, ARK. I am trying to discover, along with 2 other McClain / McLain researchers, if my g-g-g grandfather Charles McLAIN, that settled in Lawrence County, ARK with his wife Perlina UNKNOWN belongs to a line of McLAINS that migrated from Rottingham, NC. I'll have to question the other researchers about Newburn / Nuborn as I recall that name being mentioned. They have researched land, tax, wills, etc. tracking a line from North Carolina that migrated probably thru KY and owned land in Gallatin, IL, then settled in Weakley / Henry County, TN, with some coming to Arkansas. It is thought that there were brothers who settled in other areas of Arkansas. Logan County isn't that far from Lawrence County. It appears that my Charles McLAIN, farmer, and wife Perlina UNKNOWN came to Ark. between 1843 and 1850, as they are on the 1850 census in AR. From other research, it appears that the famly traveled back and forth between TN and IL/KY while in TN, and also between ARK / TN. I know that while settled in Arkansas, a son Squire had chidlren in Ark, but one of the younger daughters was born in MO, with the next child born in ARK. So they were going back and forth to ??perhaps other family in MO. States of TN, ARK, MO, IL, KY all very close together at one point. Charles McLAIN, born circa 1804, probably in NC, not certain of parents but have some possibilities Wife: Perlina UNKNOWN, born about 1811 1850 census, Lawrence Co., Strawbury township Children: 5 known *Christianna, b 1830-32, TN *David, b 1834, TN *John Henry, b 1837, TN (my great-great grandfather) *Esquire (Squire, b 1842, TN) *another son born . . . William California, 1853, Lawrence Co.--1860 census. H1860 census info , as well as 1870, 1880 census info Christianna married James SMITH (census info on her family) Had children. David married Susan Mullin. David died. Susan married William FLETCHER. John Henry married Sarah Catherine AGEE, born 1842, TN (Smith Co. I think). Had several children. John Henry died 1880, Lawrence Co., widow Sarah. Squire married Malinda Caroline HARDIN (settled in Bay Siding, Craighead, ARK) Had several children William California married Ellen Fry who died. 2nd wife Nancy Saphronia MEAD. Large family of Children. more info . . . .He died 1912. Was a mail carrier and lived in Jackson County. I have his obit. 1900, 1910 census. Charles McLAIN, born circa 1804, NC, died in 1869. Published loose probate papers (I have source from Lawrence Co. list) name his son John Henry as administrator, and name his daughter Christeny SMITH, mention David McLAIN's death and a daughter Mary by wife Susan MULLIN, "now" married to William FLETCHER, and name his widow as Sarah. (Found a marriage record in 1866 for Charles' 2nd marriage to a Sarah RILEY) My great grandfather is John Henry and Sarah Catherine's son, William David McLAIN, born 1859, Lawrence Co, (Walnut Ridge). First wife Cordelia MOSIER, who died 1897. They are buried in Newport, Jackson, ARK, Walnut Grove Cemetery. His 2nd wife was Clara COOPER, b 1878, Brinkley, Monroe, ARK. They had a large family and raised 2 surviving daughter of the wife Cordelia. Much of the family are buried in Walnut Grove. William David owned a sawmill and was in partnership with his son-in-law John Robert HOLDEN in McLAIN-HOLDEN Land and Lumber CO. in Jackson County. (1906-07 City Directory in possession of a HOLDEN relative) William David McLAIN served as Jackson County Judge 1914-1919.(Info from administrator of Jackson County Rootsweb list and confirmed in historical documents, Jackson County Courthouse) Please let me know if you think there is any relationship of my McLAIN / McCLAIN line to your line. Spelling, of course, varies in documents---sometimes listed as McLEAN, McLANE or McCLANE, as well as McLAIN and McCLAIN. My line settled finally on the use of McLAIN. Free Press; Henry Co, IA; July 17, 1879 continued. > The Free Press > Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa > July 17, 1879 > > A HORRIBLE AFFAIR. > An Escaped Convict Attempts to Murder an Entire Family near Pleasant Plain. > (Fairfield Ledger) > > Our adjoining county of Washington is the scene of many sensational affairs, > but of her murders and suicides none is more horrible than the attempt made > Monday night on the family of Clark Hoskins, who lives a mile and a half north > of Pleasant Plain, and three miles southwest of Brighton. > The perpetrator of the foul deed is one Harison McClain, who came > originally from Pennsylvania several years ago, taking up his residence, such as > it was, in Henry county. He is a desperate villain, and has already served two > terms in the state penitentiary.- He was sent up from Henry county for eight > years for stabbing a man in a drunken quarrel, and served another sentence as an > accomplice in a burglary. His last sentence of eight years was commuted to seven > years because of good behavior, and he was released about the 1st of March last. > By some one who was interested in his welfare and reform he was taken to > Pleasant Plain, and recommended to some of the society of Friends in that > vicinity. Mr. Andrews found him a place as a farm laborer with Clark Hoskins, on > whom and his family he made the desperate assault. > Not suiting Mr. Hoskins as a farm hand he was discharged a week or tow ago > and left the house. A few days ago a letter was received from him by Mr. > Hoskins' sister, dated at Perlee, in which he stated they would hear from him > again. This, taken in connection with other threats, worked upon the fears of > the family somewhat, but they were not seriously alarmed. > The family consists of Clark Hoskins, a bachelor, aged about forty; his > mother, a lady of eighty-six years; his sister, Ruth, about thirty-five, and a > little girl named Ackles. Retiring Monday night at the usual hour, not dreaming > of danger, the women of the family were awakened about midnight by a series of > blows, which they thought were pistol shots, coming from an upstairs room where > Mr. Hoskins slept. In a short time a man made his appearance at their bedroom > door and demanded admittance. This was refused, but he forced his way in, > flourishing a club and commanding silence. Mrs. Hoskins remonstrated with him, > when he assaulted her, felling her to the floor. The daughter, Ruth, and the > little girl interfered and he assaulted the latter, knocking her down and > inflicting some serious wounds. By this time Hoskins aroused himself, and > running down stairs, gave the alarm, but was so frightfully wounded as to be > scarcely conscious of what he was doing. > The neighbors coming in found him covered with blood from four ugly wounds > on his head, and insensible.- Mrs. Hoskins was lying on the floor in an > unconscious condition with her skull fractured, and the little girl was > suffering terribly from the wounds she had received, Mr. Hoskins being the only > one of the family uninjured. > The entire neighborhood was alarmed in a few minutes and by one o'clock > parties of armed men were securing the woods in every direction searching for > the assassin. Dispatches were sent up and down the railroad, and at present it > appears that the fiend cannot escape capture, and if captured death will > certainly be his punishment, for the people seem determined not to await the > slow process of law.- This view of the question seems all the more probable when > it is considered that McClain has already been sent to the penitentiary twice > for reform and it has failed, and of the alarming frequency of deeds of violence > in that section of the country. > The weapon used in the murderous assault was a stick of black oak about > eighteen inches long and as large as a man's arm. It is a dangerous looking > weapon and did hard service, as the bark was almost completely stripped from it > by hard usage. The bed on which Hoskins was asleep was saturated with blood, and > it had run through into pools on the floor. The latest accounts have it that > Mrs. Hoskins is in a more precarious position than her son, but it is difficult > now to tell whether either will survive their injuries. > Since the above was written Messrs. Henry Pickard and Pleasant Hoskins, to > whom and Isaac Crumley, we are indebted for our particulars- have given us a > description of the fiend, Harrison McClain. He is about 35 years of age; weighs > about 150 pounds; is of rather dark complexion with brown mustache, and hair a > little darker.- There is a large scar on the back of his head, extending > downward from his right ear; when last seen he wore a stiff, black felt hat. > >From his long confinement he cannot travel far, and it is hoped this may lead to > his capture. A reward of $50 will be paid by the citizens of Pleasant Plain for > him to return to that place. > -- > A terrible storm passed over Plymouth county, Iowa on the 3d instant. Two young > men by the name of Kass were killed. At first the storm looked like an hour > glass, and then it changed to a straight column, and finally drifted away. > > Last January Wm .McKinsey disappeared from the house of Thos. L. Hohne, of > Madison township, Iowa. During his absence Hohne has been several times tried > for his murder, and barely escaped lynching by his neighbors. MrKinsey, on the > 1st inst., appeared in Polk County, and gave an account of himself. > -- > Thomas A. Edison's electric light is not a failure, and it will undoubtedly in a > comparatively short time supercede the use of gas. He says to a Sun reporter: "I > recognize the impatience of the public over the delay in bringing the light > before them, but we must start with a perfect plant and we are going on to > perfection," even in the supply of metal for burners. > -- > The Prohibitionists assembled in state convention at Cedar Rapids on > Wednesday July 16th. The convention proper, after a stormy session, by a vote of > 41 to 32 decided not to nominate a state prohibitory ticket, and then adjourned. > After adjournment the minority met at the Grand Hotel and nominated the > following ticket: Prof. G.T. Carpenter, of Oskaloosa, for governor; Prof. J.C. > Nash, of Des Moines, for state superintendent; Frank S. Campbell, of Newton, for > lieutenant-governor, and J.M.
