Mary married Samuel Nevens (or Nevins or Nevans) on 16 Oct 1817 in Mercer Co., KY, and moved to Indiana (Vigo Co. area). Following Samuel's death, she married John Martin Doty in Vigo Co. and lived the remainder of her life in Parke Co., Indiana. Undocumented family tradition is that the father's name may have been James and that he drowned in Cape Fear, NC. Also may have been a ship captain. I, too, would appreciate any help in tracing either parent of the three sisters.

He was born 8/16/1893 and died about 1959. He was married to Theresa M. Oakley. They were married about 9/25/1920. they had four children. Leonard, Loretta.Edna Lois and Mary Virginia. My grand mother was Edna Lois McClain Ballinger. And my mother is Barbara. My Great-Aunt Virginia was married four times. Her married names were in order Bolin, Stanley,Poe, Remer. She had between 8-11 children. She was a bit older than my grandma. So her kids some of them are a bit older than my mom and her sibling. Aunt Loretta married Harry Young. Leonard never married. I would greatly appreciate any information any on has on James McClain and his side od the family. I also would love to her more about My Aunt Virginia. My grandma said she was very outspoken in her ways for the times they grew up in.Thanks to anyone who can help me fill in this part of my family tree. Anyone with Oakley info I would love to hear ab! out also.

Not in civilized society. A few exceptions exist, during times of plague etc., or in the case of slavery, but even there...it was known quite early on that this would cause deformation, and worse, creating a loss of property and often trouble during labor to the mother. Some families had been doing marriages between cousins for centuries when they came to America, with better results, but by far I have to disagree that marriages between siblings were ever 'common' let alone quite common, in America.
