    2. This may be too complicated to work on the list but we can start here. The Wilson Co TN McClains did come from Guilford Co NC as part of a mass migration to that area in the 1790's. The Donnell family was a part of that migration. William McClain b.1773 d. abt 1818 was the father of most of the McClains in Wilson Co. He did have a brother, John, who moved to Wilson Co with him but he disappears after 1804. There were several distinct lines (at least I think they were distinct) in Guilford Co. William came from the Moses McClain line. I am unaware of the name, Jane, ever being used in this family. William did have a son, Alexander Foster McClain, who did move to Weakley County TN betweebn 1835 and 1840. He settled just NW of Dresden. He had a large family and there are members of that line in the area today. As best I can tell, these McClains have no connection to the Rockingham County NC McClains who are the ancestors of most of the McClains in the Weakley-Henry-Graves-Calloway Co area. Another distinct line in Guilford Co was the John McClain line. One of the early Johns married Jane Marshall and the name Jane is used extensively in that line. Some of this family pioneered Franklin Co IL in the early 1800's. I hope this helps a little. E-mail me if we need to discuss further. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McLain, McClain, McClean, McLane, Agee, Smith, Hardin, Mullins/ Mullens, Fry and Mead, Fletcher. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3kz.2ACIB/1031 Message Board Post: Looking for info on McLain, McClain, McClane, McClean, etc. family line, living for many years in Lawrence County, AR. A line thought to be from ? to NC>IL>KY>TN>AR. I first find the possibly in Weakley County, TN, then in Arkansas. In Arkansas the line is from Charles (1805-09 IL) and Perlina McLain that settled before 1850 in Lawrence County: Children--Christianna 1831, David 1834, John Henry 1835-37, Esquire (or Squire) Feb. 1842 TN --all these children born in TN, and then William California b 1853 in AR. Marriages of the children were to: Agee, Smith, Hardin, Mullins/ Mullens, Fry and Mead, and there are ties to Fletcher. I am on John Henry's line, but I'm trying to track his brother Squire's line. Squire married a Malinda (Melinda ?) Caroline Hardin and one of their sons was James D., b 1867, who married Lizzie Unknown, b about 1878 TN. All Squire's children were born in Arkansas--Craighead or lawrence Co. area, also lived in Black River . . .but one daughter Serilda (?spelling) was born in Missouri. Squire and a ?Ethelinda last appear on the 1900 census in lawrence Co., Lawrence township with another daughter Bernice---and they live next door to their son James D. and Lizzie Unknown. James D. and Lizzie had two sons----James D., b about 1889, and Joseph, born about 1899 in Lawrence County. (I might have found the son James D. on the 1930 census---see below). I last found this above family as McCLEAN on the 1900 census Roll: T623 64; Page: 5A; Enumeration District: 70.Lawrence Co, ARK. They were living next door to the father Squire McClean and wife Malinda Caroline (Hardin)---but her name appears as something like "Ethelinda, or E. Melinda" . . . I might have found the junior James D. (b about 1889-1890) on the 1930 census in Star City, Lincoln County, Ark, with a wife Amanda L. and a daughter Shrilda (perhaps Serilda) which is a name used before in my McLain family---by James D's grandfather Squire. The 1930 census record: James D. McLain, head, Male, w, age 39, married age 25, AR,AR,AR, Operator, Fertilizer Plant Wife Amanda L., age 37, marr age 23, AR,AR,AR Shrilda M. daughter (similar to Serilda daughter of Squire who was James D's grandfather) Shrilda age 8, single, AR,AR,AR I'm hoping somebody can tell me about this family on the 1930 census---- Audrey Williams Stanaland

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3kz.2ACIB/650.1.2.2.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: The 1900 census shows Walice stationed at Capiz, Panay Island, in the Philippines. He's single, home address 1216 13th St., Beaver Falls PA. He's shown as born in PA of parents born in PA. Back at Beaver Falls that year his brother George McClain, b Aug 1870, is listed as head of a household consisting of himself, sister Sadie (Sarah) b May 1867, brother Dick b Apr 1875, and sister Lizzie b Jun 1878. These four are shown as b PA of parents b Ohio. There's no indication their father was an immigrant. According to the 1880 census, Walice (listed as Wallace D.) had a brother named Harry, then aged 1 yr, or born around 1879. The 1900 census shows Harry McClain, b Mar 1878 PA PA PA, wife Viola and daughter (Gladys) b May 1900, at 620 13th St., Beaver Falls. The name of the head of the household next door to Harry is blotched. It looks to me like R. G. McClain, b Oct 1831, age 68, b PA, father b Ireland, mother b PA, day laborer. R. G.'s wife's name is listed as Susan, b May 1843, age 57, married 40 yrs, 9 children, 6 living. She and her parents all b PA. Since census records are sometimes very wrong on names and ages, it's not at all impossible that this couple is the same couple shown as Robert and Mary J. on the 1880. Being next door to Harry, who appears to be the same Harry who was Wallace's brother on the 1880, "R. G." and "Susan" may be Harry's parents (or maybe R.G. is an uncle). If R.G. is Robert, father of Harry, then it would follow that he's Walice's fath! er, too. The indications are that your Robert McClain was born in this country in the 1830's, so there's reason to expect eventually to find him in the 1850-60-70 censuses, possibly in OH, WV or PA. The birthplaces of his children on the 1880 census suggest he would have been living in PA in 1870. If you've only seen the 1880 census listing for Robert's household in transcription form, you should make a point of checking the original on microfilm, to see if the ages are copied correctly, and to see what other clues may be there that do not show up in the transcription. County records in Lawrence and Beaver Counties should be searched for the name McClain (and all variant spellings of the name).
