    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McLain, McClain, McClane Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3kz.2ACIB/1067 Message Board Post: Catherine S. McLain, b. Aug 28, 1834, d. Jan 4, 1911, was born in Bedford County, PA, and migrated through Ohio to Story County Iowa, arriving in Nevada, Iowa approximately 1855. She was the daughter of Wilson and Sara (Lochard) McLain and was orphaned as a child, when first her mother, then her father died, the latter while trying to establish a farm in Ohio. Her brothers, Frank A and Russell M McLain arrived in Nevada, Iowa about the same time. In fact, the McLains were the second family in Nevada. Catherine was first married to Tom Larcom, but he went insane and a divorce was granted in 1856. She then married a carpenter named Moses Hunt. Catherine and Moses Hunt are buried in Collins, Iowa, 6 miles from Nevada. All of these McLains are direct descendants of Azariah and Sophia Houck McLain of Maryland and Bedford, County, PA. Catherine's whereabouts and life story were previously unknown by researchers of this line, but this information recently emerged. Contact! me if there is further interest.

Surnames: McClain Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3kz.2ACIB/580.588.720.2 Message Board Post: I have a very limited number of the McClain Exchange newsletters -- five, to be exact: September 1, 1997, December 1, 1997, June 1, 1998, September 1, 1998, and December 1, 1998. I think there must have been one for March 1, 1998 but it's not in my file. I only subscribed for a short time before Don Marsh discontinued the McClain Exchange; right after that he announced his illness. I also downloaded and printed several of the "McClain-A-Day" newsletters in 1997. If you are interested in these items, I will be happy to send them to you at no charge as I'm on a mission to clean out my files. I am a descendant of Phillip Bailey McClain of Marion County, Iowa. DeVoe's, "Deveaux Genealogy." His son, Oscar DeVoe was a printer for the Nyack Journal News. His son, Curtis (my Grandfather) was in charge of the Erie RailRoad. His son, Bob (my dad) was director for the Kroger Company. Me, Timothy, am employed at SYSCO Food Services of Atlanta. William DeVoe was indeed a publisher for one of New York's first 'Penny Newspapers' called the "Jeffersonian." My brothers and I have all the actual publications which are bound in four different books. 1834-1836. William also published another paper called, "Transcripts." I have searched for these publications but to no avail. Any Help? William sold his printing presses to Horace Greeley (publisher of the New York Times) in 1836. Greeley then started a weekly newspaper called the "Jeffersonian" in Albany, New York. William then opened a general store in Tappan, New York and became one of the wealthiest people in that town. His home is now the Tappan Library. Any additional information about my cousins would be greatly appreciated. Email back sometime. Thanks, Your Cousin, Tim DeVoe "TJ3Lauren2@aol.com"

This is the email I sent out the other day.........at least parts of it.........I will add more at the bottom I think John McCLAIN, son of Charles and Elizabeth McCLAIN (lived in Gallatin Co, Il 1817 & 1818 at least) was married to Lydia WILLIAMS, daughter of Newbern and Mary WILLIAMS.....now for reason that I believe this fact. John McCLAIN b abt 1805/06 and Lydia ???? McCLAIN DORITY b abt 1805/06 had 9 children 1...Allen b 14 February 1825 (my great granddaddy) stayed in Weakley Co, Tn. 2...Elizabeth b 18 February 1826 d 20 May 1910 m William A. DUNLAP, Jr. Stayed in Weakley Co, Tn 3...Joseph b abt 1827 m Mary ?? went to Johnson Co, Ar. (Named a son Newborn..and that name runs through the family) 4...Newbern b abt 1829 went to Ark around Cord, Ar. I have visited his grave (This is son Newborn that also named a son Newborn) 5...Mary b 1833 I think she married William Lowery in Illinois but in old came back to live with her sister Elizabeth where she died and is buried at Patterson Cemetery in the South of Weakley 6...Charles b 1834 went to Pike Co, Il joined the Union Army and died 1864 due to Civil War 7...John b 1836..I think he had taken out a marriage licenses to Louisa Webb......he either died or left the country as they never married. 8...Fanny b 1840 went with Lydia to Johnson Co, Il 9...Caroline b 1843 went with Lydia to Johnson Co, Il where she married G. NOW><>>>>>>>>>>> pay attention to this child 6...Charles b 1834 went to Pike Co, Il joined the Union Army and died 1864 due to Civil War We have always wondered WHAT< WHO>WHY got him to Pike Co, Il...........here is what has been found at this time......... 1832 in Henry Co, Tn.......Newborn WILLIAMS made a note of $70.00 to John SNEED with William PATTERSON as Trustee.......Now.......Nazareth COOK was Newborn WILLIAMS surety on this note........well I always wonder when there is a surety on the note......."are they related and how"...........Ok.........This is the first time that Nazareth COOK has entered the picture.......Newborn WILLIAMS and John McCLAIN had several transactions ......... Now I go looking for one Nazareth COOK.........I type the name in Ancestry.com........up comes the name as being born in Kentucky 1796 and residing in non other than PIKE COUNTY, ILLINOIS in 1850............Ok.......John McCLAIN died in Weakley Co, Tn. 1846........Lydia, his widow married Dec, 1850 to Dennis Dorrity and they moved to Johnson Co, Il.........Charles, #6 child of John and Lydia McCLAIN married in PIKE COUNTY, ILLINOIS 19 August 1852 Pike IL Book I Page 177 One more thing and I know there were tons of kids by these names.........but the name CAROLINE runs in the McCLAIN family.............Nazareth COOK has a daughter named Caroline!!!!!!!
