To those of you who have 'mystery' residents in the family plot: I'm not trying to be stupid here, but are you getting your info from just death certificates and headstones or have you also read the burial records at the cemetery? I've found them to provide a wealth of information and it really helped me tie in folks, not to mention giving me present day people to phone and from whom I could get yet more information. Another possibly untapped resource is the funeral parlor. If you have a city and know which mortuary normally buried your people it is a pretty safe bet they've been doing so all along.
