Graveside services for Hazelle Alline McCarty, age 90, of Houston were held Sunday afternoon, April 30, at Grapeland City Cemetery, with Rev. Kennith Mobley officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey &Foster, Grapeland. Miss McCarty died Friday, April 29, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston. She was born February 15, 1910, in Grapeland to early day Grapeland physician Dr. W.D. McCarty and Sallie Breazeale McCarty. A retired school teacher, Miss McCarty taught school in Hays Springs, Grapeland, Goodrich, Kermit, Alexander Hamilton and Lamar High School in Houston. Miss McCarty also taught at the University of Houston, St Thomas University and University of Texas as Austin. She was a member of the Wilow Meadows Baptist Church, Houston. Miss McCarty was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters: Louise McCarty Thomas, Lucille McCarty Lansford, and Maude McCarty Sadler; and three brothers: Walter McCarty, Clarence McCarty, and Kenneth McCarty. She is survived by several nieces and nephews including Sallie Thomas Scarborough and Nancy Thomas Langham and husband, Max, all of Grapeland. Memorials may be made to Baylor University, Willow Meadows Baptist Church in Houston, or to the First Baptist Church of Grapeland.
