Carolyn, I've been trying to get around to posting my own IN McCartys -- but when I saw your post I couldn't delay any longer. I don't know your James McCarty, but I do know McCartys in Edgar Co., IL. My Samuel D. lived there for quite a number of years and died there in 1900. He's buried in Edgar Cemetery in Paris. He was born in Jefferson Co., IN in 1836, one of 6 children of Henry and Hester (Esther) McCarty. Census records say they came from PA and were both born ca. 1800. Henry died in Jennings Co., IN in 1864. Henry McCarty + Hester (Esther) [maiden name unknown] James Irwin Henry Manville Zerreldia (various spellings) + John Simper(s) 1847 in Jefferson Co., IN William W. (Feb. 4, 1829 - Dec. 15, 1910) + Lucy Lott Nov. 22, 1849 Samuel D. (Jul. 23, 1836 - Nov. 16, 1900) + Emily Herndon, Mary Raffety, Martha Baum Amanda V. (b. 1838) + Lewis Gray Aug. 20, 1860 I believe these are the only offspring of this marriage as the info comes from Henry's will which is fairly comprehensive. I know a good deal about the descendants of Samuel D. and Mary Raffety (Emily died less than a year after their marriage and he had no children with Martha). I have some more info about some of these kids. I have a reasonably large collection of miscellaneous McCarty notes from Edgar Co., IL and from IN. The only obvious match to your folks I found on a quick skim through is a marriage for Ola Alice McCarty, age 18, of Richland Co., IL, d/o James McCarty and Susan Deavers to James Barnhart, age 24, of Dana. Barnhart is a farmer and the s/o James and Cammie Kaufman. Marr. was July 29, 1895. I also have a reprint of the 1879 History of Edgar County, Illinois. There's not a lot there about James or James H. -- just listings as taxpayers -- though it looks like there must have been more than one James H. there in 1879 or else he owned property in more than one township. I don't have any positive connection between my family and the KY McCartys yet, though I suspect they're related to the Falls of the Ohio gang. Anything look familiar?
