    1. Re: [McCARTY-L] McCarty in Ohio
    2. Gloria, As near as we know our John never lived in Pennsylvannia. He was supposedly born in Virginia in 1798. His wife was born and raised in Culpepper Co. Virginia and that is where we beleive the marriage took place. We know that John resided in Ohio in the 1830's since some of his children were born there. And he is buried in Morgan co. That is not to say that prior to his marriage or maybe for a year or so he might not have lived in Pennsylvannia. But with the spacing of his children and the early date of his death I don't think that he was in Pennsylvannia There is the possibility that he is a nephew of Pauls. It is hard to say since so far I have had no luck at all with the line beyond John. I am begining to wonder if he just named himself McCarty? Actually I have a few clues such as his supposed participation in the war of 1812. He seems to be a little young for service but who knows? terri

    2. I have been looking for a James T. McCarty that was born in Arkansas in the 1860 timeframe and probably lived in Illinois sometime from 1935 on and died Chicago area in maybe the 1950's. I know this is sketchy info but would appreciate any help. Alan Schroeder

    2. Sharon, By any chance do you know the father of William? I have a Leonard Clinton McCarty born in Wisconsin in 1874 who moved to Idaho. He arrived after 1906. So he is not a direct relation. But might be a cousin. His father was from Ohio and moved to Wisconsin after the civil war. Perhaps others of the family headed west too? terri

    1. Re: [McCARTY-L] McCarty in Ohio
    2. Hi Terri This is a long stretch! According to the Bell Anthology in Washington Co. PA, Paul McCarty lived in Frederick Co. VA before moving to Washington Co. PA, likely moving with two small children. He is already in Washington Co. PA by the 1790 census. On the 1800 Census West Bethlehem, Washington Co. PA is a John McCarty listed on the same page as Paul McCarty (possibly a son???) This John has 1 male 16-26, 1 m 26-56, 2 f 0-10, 1 f 16-45.On the 1820 census is a J. McCarty in Mt. Pleasant, Washington Co. PA and also a J. Jr. listed on the same page. Does any of this make sense with your John? Gloria

    2. Louise, Where are your PA McCartys from? I'm a descendant of Paul McCarty, probably son of Silas McCarty of Bucks Co. PA. I'm trying to prove that Paul son of Silas went to Frederick Co. VA after the death of his first wife Cassander Williams and in VA married Catherine Spohn, then moved to Washington Co. PA. Can you help with this family? Gloria

    3. Ruth I will study the information that you sent me and see what I can find. I only know that my James H. McCarty was born in KY. I know that he deffinately had a brother named John A. McCarty who lived obvisously not to far from James and Susannah because he told about visiting they frequently. Maybe this will help. Would you happen to have anything about a John A. McCarty . And here we go again I have no idea what the A stood for in his name. This is really interesting because my mother and I always figured that perhaps James H stood for James Henry McCarty but we have never been able to come up with anything to prove what his middle name really was. . He signed everything James H. McCarty. This is very interesting because I never knew of their daughter ever being married to a Barnhart. I do have a copy of where Susannah McCarty applied for a pension form James H McCarty having been in the service and there is a statement in it where Susannah states the correct name of their daughter is Iola Alice McCarty.and not Ola Alice McCarty. I figured that Ola was a nickname. I have found where other members of this family married by their nicknames. My mother is deceased now but Ido remember her talking about a Kaufman family. I just could not remember form where and how. Please let me know if you have anything on John A. William and Meta moved to Olympia after the children were born... William was a longshoreman we believe. Also looking for information on Stockton REEM father to Meta above. He married Harriet BULLIS. Please contact me directly if you have information, I am willing to share. These are not my direct ancestors but are ancestors of my cousins. Sharon Moore [email protected]

    3. Carolyn, I've been trying to get around to posting my own IN McCartys -- but when I saw your post I couldn't delay any longer. I don't know your James McCarty, but I do know McCartys in Edgar Co., IL. My Samuel D. lived there for quite a number of years and died there in 1900. He's buried in Edgar Cemetery in Paris. He was born in Jefferson Co., IN in 1836, one of 6 children of Henry and Hester (Esther) McCarty. Census records say they came from PA and were both born ca. 1800. Henry died in Jennings Co., IN in 1864. Henry McCarty + Hester (Esther) [maiden name unknown] James Irwin Henry Manville Zerreldia (various spellings) + John Simper(s) 1847 in Jefferson Co., IN William W. (Feb. 4, 1829 - Dec. 15, 1910) + Lucy Lott Nov. 22, 1849 Samuel D. (Jul. 23, 1836 - Nov. 16, 1900) + Emily Herndon, Mary Raffety, Martha Baum Amanda V. (b. 1838) + Lewis Gray Aug. 20, 1860 I believe these are the only offspring of this marriage as the info comes from Henry's will which is fairly comprehensive. I know a good deal about the descendants of Samuel D. and Mary Raffety (Emily died less than a year after their marriage and he had no children with Martha). I have some more info about some of these kids. I have a reasonably large collection of miscellaneous McCarty notes from Edgar Co., IL and from IN. The only obvious match to your folks I found on a quick skim through is a marriage for Ola Alice McCarty, age 18, of Richland Co., IL, d/o James McCarty and Susan Deavers to James Barnhart, age 24, of Dana. Barnhart is a farmer and the s/o James and Cammie Kaufman. Marr. was July 29, 1895. I also have a reprint of the 1879 History of Edgar County, Illinois. There's not a lot there about James or James H. -- just listings as taxpayers -- though it looks like there must have been more than one James H. there in 1879 or else he owned property in more than one township. I don't have any positive connection between my family and the KY McCartys yet, though I suspect they're related to the Falls of the Ohio gang. Anything look familiar? There is a Toliver McCarty in Ninety-Six, SC whose father was 52 when he was born. Some of these McCarty's have had children when they were old enough to be grandparents. My father, Paul M. McCarty, Sr was born in 1920. My grandfather, Samuel Preston McCarty was born in 1879. My great grandfather Dennis Preston McCarty was born in 1854 and my great great grandfather Reuben William McCarty was born in 1822. Robert has more then a couple of years on me. Paul

So many people don't know that books published after 1923 are still under copyright. There are several ways you can get the same information and probably more as Carol "abstracted" the material. 1. The microfilm itself is available from the SC state archives at $30 a roll. 2. The microfilm is available through the Family History Centers at about $3 for one month's rent. 3. Heritage Books has a website where you can order the books. Most of their books range in price from about $15-17. For authors that are interested, they don't pay an advance, but royalities are only 10%, paid 2 times a year. Carol has really had a rough time of it in her life. Her husband died in her arms in an auto accident. She worked her way up from assistant/secretery to the archivist of a small college to be the archivist and raised 2 children by herself. She was almost 70 went she retired. I guess I am a little protective of her... but I also know how I would feel if someone took my hard work and plastered it on the internet for free <smile> especially when it means I couldn't pay my utility bills, etc. as Social Security don't go very far these days. Thanks Annette
