This is in the longpshot category but let's try it anyway. I have a McCan family here in early 19th century Co. Meath, father John Henry a miller at Rathnally. Usual big family including 7 sons named Henry Alexander, John, Francis, George Michael Andrew, Arthur Frederick, Joseph and William. Father went bankrupt in 1829. In the 1830's Joseph went to Australia and William to NZ. but where the other sons went I don't know. No sign of them in Ireland anyway.. Could have been Canada for all I know. Big snag is that the family always spelt the name McCan..
Thanks for or query, Joni. All Ican tell you is that I was struck by the first names. Both Alexander and Grorge are unusual amongst irish Catholic families. The last trace of this family is in Dublin in the 1830's, they had something to do with the flour trade (father as a miller) but after 1840 they vanish completely. Any idea of where in Ireland your family came from ? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anthony McCan" <antmccan@eircom.net> To: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com>; <mccann@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2012 10:06 AM Subject: Re: [McCANN] George Alexander McCann b 10/5/1854 in Canada. mKateSawyer 1878 > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> > To: <MCCANN-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, March 26, 2012 6:26 PM > Subject: Re: [McCANN] George Alexander McCann b 10/5/1854 in Canada. m > KateSawyer 1878 > > >> This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. >> >> Author: JoniRabena >> Surnames: McCann >> Classification: queries >> >> Message Board URL: >> >> http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mccann/814.1/mb.ashx >> >> Message Board Post: >> >> Hi, >> >> Is this man in any way related to the Hugh - Arthur, John, Patrick McCann >> family that settled in Hibbert, Perth South, Ontario, Canada area? >> >> If so, then I would be extremely interested as I am helping a friend >> research his McCann roots. >> >> Thanks, >> >> Joni >> >> Important Note: >> The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
