The McCanns who were in Armagh were thrown out right after the Battle? of the Diamond. That's where the saying To Hell or Connaught came from. After that battle, the Protes. went after the Catholics. Most of them went to County Mayo until their immigration. I will get back into this in a day or two and check some names. 3. Could the town you are seeking be Ballyhaunis? The Baronies of County Mayo and the main towns in each Barony are: ERRIS - Belmullet; TIRAWLEY - Ballina; GALLEN - Swinford & Kiltimagh; TIRERAGH (small portion thereof, remainder in Co. Sligo); COSTELLO (including a portion in Co. Roscommon) - Ballaghaderreen, Charlestown, Ballyhaunis; CLANMORRIS - Claremorris; KILMAINE - Ballinrobe; ROSS (small portion thereof, remainder in Co. Galway); CARRA - Castlebar; BURRISHOOLE - Newport & Westport; MURRISK - Louisburg. The earliest Roman Catholic baptismal register in Co. Mayo is for the parishes of Crossboyne & Tagheen which begin in 1744. The National Archives in Dublin holds these records. However, without a town or parish name to search you are faced with a daunting task. Each County has a Heritage Centre which can be quite helpful. Note that Mayo was especially hard hit with the famine and lost half of their residents to death and emigration. My great-grandfather, Michael Flynn, son of Michael Flynn and Mary McCann (dau. of John McCann), was born in Mayo in 1842 during one of the worst years for Co. Mayo. The Mayo Heritage Centre can't find any record of his baptism and tell me that with all the upheaval caused by the famine many births and baptisms went unrecorded. He came to Illinois alone at age 16. Michael mar. Mary Mahan, also born in Co. Mayo. Does anyone know the haplogroup (Y chromosome) for McCann? I've done the male DNA for FLYNN and it was R1B1 and originated in Co. Mayo. Dear Dad was a descendant of Celtic King Niall of the Nine Hostages and never knew he was "royal" (which he intensely detested, especially British). I'd also like to know the haplogroup for McCann. When searching the old Irish records note that McCann/MacCann also appears as MacGann, Mag Annaidh (Gaelic). -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2012 2:35 PM To: MCCANN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [McCANN] McCANN - Ireland to Canada This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
