    1. [McCANN] John McCan
    2. Jim: As to your question about John McCan, as you know Kellog did some early research on that family, and he seemed to believe that John was one of the sons of Lawrence McCan, as well as Daniel and Patrick and James. He mentions that in a list of Washington County Pa. militia was John McCan, along with Daniel and James. They had settled after the war near Lightburn on McCan's Run. Daniel, he says was in Capt Timothy Downey's Co and listed in the 5th class, The place of Daniel in the 5th class tells us that he was older than John, who was in the 2nd class. James was in the 4th class, so that makes him younger than Daniel, but older than John. Washington County at that time covered all south-western Pa and even territory of Virginia. - land which was still in dispute with Va. This John McCan is the one who disappeared suddenly, last appearing in 1798. He had signed as a wwitness to Patrick's marriage to Hannah Johnson in 1787. In 1796 he signed for surety for Patrick to keep an Inn in 1796. For other John McCan's Kellog writes: John McCan appears in Colonel Ewings Battalion for the Flying Camp in Aug 1776. John McCan appears as a Pvt in the muster roll of Capt Horatio Slaggetts Co in the 3rd Maryland Rg't. for Dec. 1779. John McCan In a muster roll of Maryland Corps in service for the U.S commanded by Capt Thomas Beal for Jan to Oct in 1780. John McCan also in a list for the 4th Co, 4th Btn.
