Jane, that rule applies to all of the 1920 census on ancestry.com. I recently discovered this trick myself and located tons of "missing" McCanns. I imagine it may be true for other years also. Also, I have found that you cannot trust soundex, I have found my McCanns listed as "McCarny" and "McKann" which didn't show up when I used the soundex option. If you have access to an index (genealogy library has them), it is best to locate the county and search all the Ms for possible misspellings.
