Regarding searching for "McCann" vs. "Mc Cann". I tried the two different spellings for the 1850 census on ancestry.com and got 42 hits for "McCann" and 1083 for "Mc Cann". This is something I never would have thought of, as I grew up spelling it McCann without the space. It is probably just a transcription error. Also, some of the databases on ancestry (I only checked a few) will give you different results for each way. From now on, I will check both ways. Leslie
Thanks, Leslie, for doing that systematic check and reminding us again to try both ways. We just did not need others making our McCan/Mc Canns any harder to find that they were! I don't think that space should be there at all. Perhaps it is also time to remember some of the other possible spellings when you get to early records like tax lists where you might see MCan or Machan.
