    3. For old timers on the list, I have not found conclusive proof of the origins of my John of Wilkes county, NC who arrived c. 1800. For newbies, I will post my need again to gain more information on this John who shows up in Wilkes just after the turn of the century, complete with a family, and with his eldest son James b. 1780s stating in later census reports that he, James, was born in Pennsylvania. The descendents are fairly well fixed but John appeared, paid above normal prices for land, built a mill, etc. so he must have had an above average economic standing/age when he arrived. Several of us have worked on this for years without success -- but we gained a lot of new relatives/friends. Does anyone have any additional information? Jim Knoxville, Tn.

Hi, Jim, Good to "see" you again. At this point I don't recall how much of my additional John McCann sightings in PA I've actually shared, but perhaps these are worth repeating and they suggest that this information may apply to two different John McCan[n]s: Greene County, PA [which had been a part of Washington County, and earlier part of Westmoreland, and before that Bedford Co., PA] tax assessment lists [due for prior year; payable in year noted], recorded directly from the original records: In Greene Twp.: 1797 John Mcan listed as "weaver to trade" no valuation 1798 John McKann weaver no valuation 1799 NOT listed.
