(Algerine) McCann. I have a copy of the Soldier's Application for Pension (#1636) for A.G. McCann of Webster County, LA. It is a very poor copy but I want to share what info. is on it. This was filed June 27, 1899 ref. Co. B, 28th LA Reg. Not sure exactly what it refers to but it says: Allowed 70, Quarterly Allowance 8.00 ... then $8.70. Opens with I, A.G. McCann, a native of Georgia, and now a citizen of LA, resident at Sarepta, in the Parish of Webster ... was a soldier from the State of LA Confederate..... was born Stewart County, Georgia in the year 1834. (Q). When & where did you enlist and in what command? On the 11th day of May 1862 in Bellvue, Bosier Parish in Company B. Sworn in some days later at Trinton, LA. (Q) Give names of reg and co officers under whom enlisted and were serving at date of discharge or parole. J.W. Rabb was first captain as soon as reg formed. Henry Gray was colonel at close of war.! T.W. Pool (?) was colonel and T.W. Abney was captain. (Q) Were you wounded? No. (Q) If discharged or paroled, where and when? Paroled in June, 1865. (Q) Where were you at surrender? Near Natchitoches, LA. (Q) If prisoner, in what camp and when released and where sent? Not a prisoner a time of surrender. Was prisoner for a short while in Feb. 1864 at Algiers, LA. Taken to Port Hudson, paroled and afterwards exchanged. (Q) Did you take the oath of allegiance to US during war? No. (Q) If so, where, when and under what circumstances. Never took oath until after the surrender in 1865. (Q) How long a resident of LA. Since Nov. 1859 in Bossier/Webster Parishes. (Q) Are you married? Yes. (Q) What is size of family? I have 9 living children. Wife and 3 children with me. (Q) What are the respective ages of wife and children. Wife 54 years, Oldest child 39, youngest 15. (Q) How many children and how many of each sex? Nine. Five boys, 4 daughters. (Q) Are yo! u engaged in business? I try to farm and earn but little. (q) Have you any estate in your own right, real or personal, and it's value? Have owned 80 acres land which was sold for taxes in 1896 and have never been able to redeem it. (Q) Has your wife any estate? No. (Q) How have you derived suport for self and family for last 5 years and what prevents you from earning a living now? By what labor I have been able to perform with the assist of my children. Physically unable to work, wife's health very bad .. have 9 children .. 4 of them are cripples. (Q) Do you use intoxicants? No. (Q) Have you an attorney to look at this? No. (Q) Give names of two or more of your comrades with ther PO addresses. ?.J. Gray. Cotton Valley. T. Bakley Timothen (?), G.B. Dennion, Sarepta, all of Webster Parish. Dated 24 Jan., 1899. .... I have a copy of his parole (#49) by order of Major General E.R.S. Canby, U.S.A. The last document of this set is a Notary Statement dated 24 Oct! ober, 1925 signed by his heirs (J.L. McCann, Pallie King, Minnie (?) Disatell (?) and P.H. McCann) and requesting that his Confederate Pensioner Check for the unpaid balance of $20.00 be sent to Dr. R. Butler of Spring Hill, LA. Hope some of my assorted McCann relatives (that I don't know yet) will find this interesting. Lynn
