HI, Folks, Sorry for what appears to be a "false alarm" regarding a C.W. McCann. Spent several hours today reviewing three local newspapers published in October 1889 looking for any mention of a McCann injury or death. There were none. Although the second column heading, in this newly published book of funeral home records, reads "Date of Death," it appears that this earliest section of the book may also include records for items purchased such as coffins and furniture. As with many early funeral home directors, this JOHNSTON firm had an extensive business in furniture sales, particularly in its early years when most funerals were conducted in the deceased's own home. So, perhaps this date of 10/17/1889 was the date when a local man named Charles Wesley McCann (1852-1924) purchased a new sofa or dining room set for his wife, Ellen E. Sanner.
