Author: jemwalsh Surnames: McCann, Noel, Wilton Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mccann/1797.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I'm not likely related nor connected in any way, simply love searching for "lost" McCanns. Found a clergyman by the name of Wilton McCann 36 who sailed from Marseilles, France to London, England in 1927 with his brother Ivan B. McCann 32 physician. Also with them were Robert McCann 70 "Secretary" and Muriel McCann 68 whose address was Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, England. Wilton McCann served in France in 1918 as a "Rev." for the Y.M.C.A. Via Google you can locate a book for sale which was once owned by a Wilton McCann. Wilton and Ivan are with Mother "Minnie" McCann in the 1901 Census of England. Minnie is listed as having been born in Limerick, Ireland, Wilton in Belfast, Ireland, and Ivan in Bangor, Ireland. Minnie is listed as married but Robert is not with this family in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England. There is a death record for an Ivan McCann in 1948, Essex, England. Hope that someone else does a search someday, hits on this email and responds to your original inquiry with a real connection. Regards, Jane P.S. Since both Wilton and Noel are used as surnames, I'm wondering if that was Muriel's Father's name, Wilton Noel? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Welcome to the McCann List, Maggie. Unfortunately, all of my McCann research has been in the States. (As an aside, there is a John Power who m. 1834 Jane McCann in Indiana, USA but no son Patrick, yet they were still having children up to 1856.) We have had a few postings about McCanns in Canada. You might search our archives. It does sound somewhat feasible that the John Power and Mary McMahon marriage in 1831 could be your John Power and Mary McCann. I have seen McCann and McMahon being confused. That could more easily occur, as you pointed out, in a non-English speaking community or where there were more McMahons than McCanns. Have you seen the Census enumeration of 1851 for Notre Dame, Quebec, Quebec? The following Patrick Power who was in Notre Dame, Quebec, Quebec, Canada doesn't seem to fit yours, but may be worth recording: Patrick Power under age one b. Canada, Catholic apparently in a household with a Thomas Power, Seaman, b. Ireland, Catholic, next birthday will be 33, male. After Thomas is listed May Morgan b. Ireland, Catholic, next birthday will be 25, female. After May is Mary Power b. Ireland, Catholic, next birthday will be 3, female. Patrick is listed after Mary. Looks like other young families have the wife/mother listed with what may be her maiden name. There is also what appears to be a church baptismal record for a Patrick Power dated 1851 with the location noted as Paspebiac and possibly Notre Dame parish[?] in Quebec. This record is handwritten in French, and unfortunately my French lessons occurred too many decades ago. . . . other names in the record are William Power and then Daniel and Mary??? Devon? and James Power and manaine Anatorie Kuord? There is another church record, possibly baptism, for a Patrick Power dated Dix Sept Fevrier [17 February]1845 with the location noted as Basilque Notre-Dame, Montreal, Quebec. Other names are John Power and Margret Malony, John Malony and Margrine Mary Anne Martin. This one looks like a real possibility if the 1845 date is close enough to be your Patrick. Best regards, Jane
