Rev. McCann was my Godfather and he christened me though too young to remember. I have vague memories of my cousin's christening which he took and I have memories of him coming to visit in the early 50's. He also had a housekeeper who must have retired because she lived in Eastbourne and we used to visit her. My email address is susan.jones12@btconnect.com. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could build up a list of young people he helped. We have four already! Regards, Sue. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I inherited it from my predecessor when I moved into my current vicarage. Anyway, I just googled the name on it to find out which church it came from. I now realise it was St Paul's, Westcliff as the inscription on the chair says it was given in memory of - you guessed it - Rev Wilton N McCann - Vicar of that church from 1921-1929. I was so glad to discover all your notes. Peace and joy, Fr Steven. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was aware of the book and bought it from a second hand bookshop on the internet for my uncle. Unfortunately he is now in a nursing home with dementia and it is very hard to communicate with him. My mother found a lovely photo today of Rev McCann who officiated at the wedding of my Uncle Peter and Aunt Eileen. I will post this on my family tree. I will be happy to give you guest access to my tree if you haven't located it already. Just let me know. Best wishes Lyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: susanI2dly Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mccann/1797.3.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello again. My mother's name was Winifred May born 1921 and she and her sister Irene were befriended by Rev. McCann and he was my Godfather also. I have also located another lady called Brenda who lives up north whose mother was also befriended by the Rev. McCann. Her mother is dead and she thinks she may have been adopted. Since talking to her, she has managed to make contact with a sister of her mother so she now has a family of her own. My mother was the 2nd youngest of many children and has the lady who brought her up, down on her birth certificate as mother, there is no father listed although she was brought up by both her mother and mother's husband. It sounds complicated but I have a strong suspicion that all was not as it seemed. Sadly my mother died 16 years ago. My mother went in to an orphanage with her younger sister when her mother died. (I ask myself why did her older siblings not look after them, I didn't think of that when she was alive. The Rev. McCann joined the NSPCC as a young man (you may know this) and was Director for several years before his death in 1954. I have been directed to a book written by Wilfred Pickles in 1953 called "Ne'er forget the people" and its about several people who he felt influenced the 20th century, the Rev. McCann is one of them. He personally helped many many children. There is a nice story about him and a lovely photograph. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, mine was less than £6 including carriage, I can direct you to the book website that I was advised of. My father became an NSPCC inspector in the early 1950's so I grew up with the NSPCC very much in my life. I have many letters that Rev. McCann wrote both to my mother when she was a teenager and to her sister, and I treasure them. I have opened a family tree for the Rev. McCAnn on the Ancestry website but apart from establishing his parents who were involved very much in the YMCA and his younger brother, I have not got very far. I understand your daughter is a member of Ancestry so perhaps she could look it up. If you have any information to add to all this I would be grateful, thank you. It appears that Loney died in 1992 based on that information and the Social Security Death Index which has: Name: Loney A. Swanson SSN: 451-20-3218 Last Residence: 98550 Hoquiam, Grays Harbor, Washington, United States of America Born: 22 Oct 1916 Died: 26 Jul 1992 State (Year) SSN issued: Texas (Before 1951) With her year of birth, I found a Lonie A. McCann age 3yr 2m in Brady, McCulloch, TX in the Census done as of 1/1/1920. She had a brother named William R. McCann b. 1918. Her Father was Arthur McCann b.c. 1891 in TX and Mother was Rilla b.c. 1900 in TX. Found that someone has posted information about William Raymond McCann b. 6 May 1918 died 1935 in McCulloch, TX and that his Mother's name was Rilla Rue Mooring b. 1901 d. 1988. They show that Arthur and Rill had also had a daughter named "Lonnie" (no date of birth) and a sister named Maggie Lee McCann b. 25 Jul 1922 in Brady, McCulloch, TX. Maggie Lee m. Guy Remington Bailey in 1938 and died 25 Oct 1961 in Corpus Christi, Nueces, TX. Apparently, at the time this information was submitted, there were living, and thus not named, children of Maggie Lee Bailey. There is some contact information regarding the people who submitted trees containing Maggie Lee McCann Bailey, one of which might lead you to living relatives: [1]http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=1800-2003&id=I0211 [2]http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=maris&id=I30315 [3]http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=njus&id=I3814 Hope that leads to more information for you. Where was she living? Do you know where she was born? Were the children who were left in San Antonio named McCann? There's a Texas Birth Index online, but it does not contain a William Preston Botkins. Was that his name after he was adopted? William Martin was born in 1873, Louisiana. He was the son of Elizabeth Gertude Leggett and Algerine McCann. Elizabeth was my gr grandmother Mary Leggett's oldest sister. Both of them had CMT. I know this from posts about Elizabeth's descendents and from the inheritance pattern with CMT type 1X, the type that runs through my Leggett line. Since at least one of my gr grandmother's sons inherited the defective gene, I know that it came from her, not her husband. Men with CMT type 1X have a 50/50 chance of passing it on ONLY to each of their daughters, while women with the disease can pass it on to sons and daughters (also a 50/50 chance with each child.) If your gr grandfather was too young to be William Martin McCann, might he have been William Martin's son? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
