I have a picture of a "Mrs. William Chamberlain" from Michigan. I think she is: Caroline (nee ??) Chamberlain, b. 1834-ish. William was b. 1834, d. 1901. William was probably was in the Mi legislature in about 1869 and then was Warden of the Jackson State Prison, Jackson, MI until his death. They had several children: those with descendants are below and all were born in Berrian County, MI. Alice b. 1858, m. James Harvey Hatfield (b. 1856 in IN). they had one son, James Chamberlain Hatfield. He married Grace Clark and they had Jean Hatfield, b. 1911. Big names in Kalamazoo from what I can gather. James and Grace divorced after he was caught cashing a bad check/fraud, something. Lucy F. b. 1866, m. Frederick A. Parsons, b. 1860 in Fairfield Co., CT. They moved there and had William C. b. 1892, Florence C. b. 1896 and Fred, Jr. b. 1901. I think Fred Jr. had a Fred A. III. I can't find much on the other children. Carrie E. b. 1870, m. Dr. Ethelbert C. McCann b. 1867 in MI. They moved to the Chicago area. They had one daughter, Elizabeth C. McCann. b. 1894 in IL. William Oliver b. 1872, mar. Josephine Supple b. 1875. They had Alice Chirstine b. 1898. Lived in the Kalamazoo area and Alice may have gone to Wells College in NY. High society from what I could gather. Benjamin Ralph b. 1882 and married Madeline ? b. 1885. They had a daughter, Caroline b. 1919. Probably lived in the Jackson area. I would love to hand this picture over to a family member if one can be found. Janet Buchanan Phoenix
Thank you, Jan. I had seen that same information. I can't find much else. I am actually trying to figure out why I have a picture of "Mrs. Wm. Chamberlain" among some mostly unlabeled pictures, and exactly who she is. I think that Caroline Chamberlain, wife of William (both b. in NH) and mother of Carrie is the best bet. I would love to get this picture to a descendant. Wm was for a short time in the Michigan Legislature, which is probably why I have it. My greatgreatgrandfather, J. Webster Childs, was also. I believe William Chamberlain (1834-1907) was also warden of the Jackson State Prison, Jackson, MI later in life. So, I am actually wanting more current information rather than "going back." I will keep searching. If you find anything else, let me know. Thank you again. Janet In a message dated 12/22/2010 1:03:22 A.M. Unfortunately, none of that sounds familiar to me, so that is a surprise, especially the name "Ethelbert." Couldn't resist taking a look at the Census to see if a record or two might might hold a few clues. Bingo! The 1900 Census of West Town, Cook County, IL [dated 6 June] has Ethelbert McCann b. Dec 1866 MI, married six years, and living with his parents, Thomas McCann b. Jun 1842, Canada, and wife Julia b. Jul 1849 in OH. Julia has had three children, two survive. The other child is a son named Walter b. Oct 1869 in MI, also living with his parents. Thomas McCann's Father was reportedly born in Scotland and his Mother, in Ireland. Ethelbert's occupation is listed as physician. The 1900 Census of Jackson, Jackson, MI [dated 20 June] also has Ethel B. McCann b. Dec 1866 son-in-law living in the household of Wm. Chamberlain & wife Caroline S. Ethelbert's wife Carrie E. b. June 1869 is there with her dau. Elizabeth C. b. June 1894. Carrie reportedly had only one child and she was reportedly married seven years. Perhaps the McCanns were in the process of moving to IL in June 1900. "Googled" Ethelbert McCann and found Carrie Elizabeth Chamberlain b. 20 June 1869 in a book on the History of the Town of Canterbury, NH. Her daughter is listed as Elizabeth Chamberlain McCann b. 23 June 1894. http://books.google.com/books?id=t8MMAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA56&lpg=PA56&dq=%22Dr.+Eth elbert+McCann%22&source=bl&ots=9HyspJvIIU&sig=cS1AGpE_YzK7HbJ3dbz8gmCeClE&hl =en&ei=pkcRTYf0A4OB8ga54uXUDQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CD gQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q&f=false Hopefully, someone else will know more about this Thomas McCann b. 1842 in Canada and his parents.
