    1. [McCANN] more coat of arms info
    2. Dear clansmen and women!I I have an old cutting from a magazine called 'Ireland's Own' which did a series on surnames. The article for the McCann name was by a D.O.Hairt. It reads:- The McCann shield has a gold/yellow fretwork on a blue background. The central band or fess is in white with a wild boar in red. The salmon over the crest is depicted in natural colours. The Latin motto "Crescit sub pondere virtus' means "Virtue thrives under oppression". This idea may be symbolically interpreted from the shield. Blue, the colour representing loyalty and truth, and the colour of the Virgin Mary -"font of all virtue", shines clearly through the binding fretwork which represents "oppression". The fess occupies the central and most important part of the shield and the wild boar was the symbol of a fearless warrior and is very widely used in Irish & Scottish heraldry. The use of the fish (salmon) in the coat of arms was borrowed from the early Christian church in which a fish was often used as one of the symbols of Christ. Of course, the salmon has a special meaning in Irish Mythology- that of learning from the story of Finn MacCumhaill and the salmon of knowledge. It can also be mentioned that the McCanns were the Lords of Clanbrassil a district on the shores of Lough Neagh which would make the salmon even more appropriate as an emblem. Rgds Tony McCann

WHEN TRANSLATED THE BLAZON ALSO DESCRIBES THE ORIGINAL COLORS OF THE McCann arms as: Blue, EMBLAZONED WITH A SERIES OF GOLD INTERLOCKING VOIDED LOZENGES ON WHICH IS SUPERPOSED A SILVER FESS, CHARGED WITH A PASSING RED BOAR. ABOVE THE SHIELD AND HELMET IS THE CREST WHICH IS DESCRIBED AS, A NATURALLY COLOURED SWIMMING SALMON. CHEERS. 3. Hi: I too have gone to all the sites and none have had the Coat of Arms or the McCann Motto, Ann Meyer (Ann McCann) I found it on Kay's Genealogy MY McCann/Dye Genealogy http:www.geocmes.com/Pans/Louvre/1852/ This was found back in June of last year. This address above is the best that I can make out. The coat of Arms is very Colorful. The animal in the center looks like a Bull, Red, at that.

    2. Big River
    3. HI Julie, Thank you for responding. You can send me a genealogy report on your family if your genealogy software will generate one.. or you can write up a summary of what you know about your MCCanns and pose some questions for other researchers. Or both. If you email it/them to me as an attachment I can put it into html language and put it up on the site. In a while I am going to do a chart of names of reseachers, with their email addresses and who they are researching. Then I am going to do a list of individual names of ancestors with their birthdates and then list the name of the person(s) researching them and their contact info. I look forward to receiving your info. You can see the page at the url below. Thank you, Lin Lin Morgan Barrett http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/a/r/Lin-M-Barrett/
