Hi; Yes you are right on this one. I have sent to so many, I get them mixed up. Several I haven't heard from.,I hope I can get some info here. Will try another in Ireland also. Hi Lin: Yes , you remember this right. They first came through Mass. Peter McCann came first and worked as a domestic to earn his way and enough money to send for his family. I did find where Margaret Ann was born there in 1853, Both parents were born in Ireland. Looks like Langdon? It's hard to read some of these records. Another child was listed as being born in Mass. but so far I haven't found the record on that one. The next we know of our family is in Wisconsin. Actually, the Historian from Juneau County lived on the McCann farm there at one time. She took me out to it, and to see the Log Home they lived in. Ann, Yes, I've been reading and also printing out just about everything. I've read and re-read some of the information, I guess one of my many problems is that I just can't seem to tie any of this to the McCann's in South Texas. Could be that I don't know how, I know I have wondered many times over the years how so many seem to be able to do this. Is a lot of it just guessing, hoping are what? None the less it has been interesting all that I have read, sorry I didn't mention that I was here. I know if you still have living relatives it may be possible to get information from them, but I'm one those that waited to get into this after all have passed on. Dorothy, Thanks for the other PA information. I have not found the time to follow my McCan/ns for almost a year. I still think my Daniel Duncan McCan born 1810 in Napier Twp, Bedford Co. PA is the son of Francis McCan as he has 1 child, a son 10 years old in 1820. The McCans seem to move in and out of Bedford Co. every few years. The first name changes, but there always seems to be at least one McCan there. Does anyone have a system or know of a good way to look for marriage records in PA. ? I understand they are not at the county, but are found in the church records. Is this correct?
Hi Dodie, Thanks for an additional John or so. I do not know the county makeup of Pa. and can not seem to get it straight. Are Washington county and Chester county close to each other? Did Lawrance have a son John also? Just hoping. HI Ann, Do you think they meant County Armagh? Perhaps you mean Armagh Diocese? I thought Ara Coeli was associated with the Diocese, which incorporates more than County Armagh...also a lot of Tyrone, and perhaps Other counties. Look forward to your reply. Laurelen That John McCan (Navy and served on the Bull Dog) was found in the Pa archives, Commander was Capt William Potts. Here are some others on that same list (PA.) I found. It's interesting to note that they were all spelled with one N - Thes are all card files. 1. John McCan - rank Lt. Duty: Rec'd on acct, 20 and 31 July 1778 7.10, and 15. for recruiting service of Hartley's Reg't. Certificate issued: CG. Grand Acct., Acct. civ. Ledger B p.459 Miltia loan of 1 Apr. 1784 and 30 Mar 1785, "Public Debt" Records of the Comptrller General at D.P.R. 2. John McCan - Lieutenancy: Chester - 4th Co. Class 2nd Class Roll for the period 1780 - dated Aug 12, 1780 3. Jams McCan (this is how the name is written, no doubt "Jame's")Pvt. Lieutenancy: Washington Co. 7th Company Class 4th. 1781-1783) 4. Jams (James?) McCan Washington County - 3rd Btn 7th 4th class Commander Capt Timothy Downing Duty "M" c/r n.d. 5. Daniel McCan Washington County - 7th Co Class 5th 3rd Btn 1781-1783 Duty "M" c/r n.d. I think that this James and Daniel were the sons of Lawrence McCan, James was said to have died in the war.

For old timers on the list, I have not found conclusive proof of the origins of my John of Wilkes county, NC who arrived c. 1800. For newbies, I will post my need again to gain more information on this John who shows up in Wilkes just after the turn of the century, complete with a family, and with his eldest son James b. 1780s stating in later census reports that he, James, was born in Pennsylvania. The descendents are fairly well fixed but John appeared, paid above normal prices for land, built a mill, etc. so he must have had an above average economic standing/age when he arrived. Several of us have worked on this for years without success -- but we gained a lot of new relatives/friends. Does anyone have any additional information? Jim Knoxville, Tn.
These henry Mccanns are quite numerous in my Va/WVa family, seems each generation had a son by that name. I always find it interesting, as I have always felt that William McCan b 1792 in Va. must have had an ancestor by that name as well - I had posted at one time a letter written by a Henry McCan who had "gone west" to MO. in the early days. he wrote the letter from Franklin Co MO. in 1829. So he would have been one of the early settlers there! The 1840 census of Missouri shows the following McCanns: 1. Henry, Franklin Co., St John Twp. (census #215) 2. Alexander, St Louis Co, St Louis twp. (census #109) 3. James, Lewis Co, no twp listed (census #199) 4. James-2, Clinton Co, no twp listed (census #038) 5. Jesse, Warren Co, Elkhorn twp. (census #171) 6. Joseph, Barry Co Mt Pleasanr twp, (census #035) Further information I have is that a Henry McCan of Highland County Va (Then it was Pendleton Co) wrote the letter to a friend, not named and addressed to Hull's Store in that Co. Also this Henry appears in the Pa archives 5th series, Vol 7 (War of 1812) in the Roll of Capt Hull's Co in 1814. He seems to be the same one who moved to Mo. and probably written to Capt Hull in Va (now W Va.) I have not found anything further on this Henry McCan however. Interesting also to note that he may have been a brother to my ancestor William McCan who also served in the War of 1812. William named his 2nd son Henry, who moved to Madison Co OH with his family. If some of you would like to see the letter, would be willing to post it on the McCann list again. Regards to all Dorothy McCann-Phillips
