    1. [McCANN] McCanns in Mass
    2. amccann74
    3. Lin: What McCanns were you looking for in Mass? We had a James born there also and on the census a Peter. We do know that Peter Jr Died at age 21 in Dane County, Madison Wisconsin. We don't know if he had a family or not. I have other info from there, Also quite a story, I will get in touch with the person who sent it to me and ask her if I can share it with the McCann Site. It would explain why some of us can't find our ancestors. Some of the McCann men were Rascals, Ann Meyer (Nee Ann McCann)

    3. Dodie, Thanks. In terms of John of Wilkes, the John of Amelia, John of Cumberland and the John of Giles - in light of those who survived until the 1820 census- had too many children . I will look more carefully at the date of death of John of Wilkes to see how the 1819 date fits in. Thanks for the reply and I invite others to join in. So far I am sure searching , especially in view of your question re John as a son of Lawrence, is in order. 2. Jim, Jane and all: What bothers me about John McCan being one of the sons of Lawrence McCan is this: Tho he seemed to be perhaps a son, , because of the regular attendance at some of the weddings etc., we cannot be positive! I find that at the time of Mary McCan's death, (wife of lawrence) she doesn't mention John as a son in her will. She died 1819 as did her son Daniel. (Lawrence already had passed away). She only mentions Patrick. It seems to me that perhaps by 1819 that "maybe" John had already died, and I suppose this is a possibility. Or perhaps this John may have been a nephew of Lawrence or a grandson? Or a near relative of some sort. Here too are more John McCans who are not traced further: In Amelia Co Va - Jno. McCan with 7 whites in 1790 In Cumberland Co. Va John McCan with 5 whites in 1790. In Fluvanna Co Va Daniel McCan with 4 whites in 1790. In Giles Co Va John McCann appears 1810 census with the following: (southwest of Monroe Co ) 1 male age 0-10 5 females ages 0-10 1 male age 10-16 (this male could have been born 1794 or later.) 2 females ages 10-16 (9 children unidentified) 1 male 45 or older (no doubt John McCan) No wife listed. So this John would have been born 1765 or earlier No further info however from Giles Co Jim, wish we could find something further to help solve this mystery. All we can do is to keep searching...and hopefully something may turn up. I had been hoping for some time to prove Samuel's (b 1815) relationship to William (b 1792) and found William as being born in Parkersburg, Wood Co Va., then later found him in a clip showing him, with Samuel, Elizabeth and MaryAnn as children, being listed as being home schooled - so sometimes we get that lucky to find a piece that fits. Regards Dorothy

    3. Hi, Folks, Maybe I'm the last person to discover this, and maybe it only applies to PA, but I found that there must be a space between "Mc" and "Cann" in order to locate McCanns in the 1920 Census index on Ancestry.com --- the one that links directly to the census images. Oh, and annother note of caution: I put in too much information at first and couldn't locate people because I had entered Place of Birth as "PA" instead of "Pennsylvania!" 3. Lin: Yes, both Peter and Margaret McCann were born in Ireland, For sure Margaret was born in Armagh, as it was mentioned in a brief newspaper of her death, There were four other children that were on the 1860 Census as having been born in Ireland, Thomas, He came to America in 1852 and his naturalization was final in 1868, Patrick, Ann and Michael, Two more children were born in Mass. I only have the record for Margaret Ann, In checking it again it looks like they came from Londonderry, Ireland I don't know much about Ireland, so don't know where that could be, I have been searching in Mass and have info from people there and could look up what I have. Sorry this is so long, Hope it answers your questions. 3. Sheila, In regard to our MaCann family of the south look at Jefferson County, Florida. I did some hunting for you and this is what I found. Martha Stuart (Stewart) born 20 Nov 1820 SC. (I know the dates do not match what you have.) Father, James William Stuart Mother, Catherine Russell Martha married a Joshua MaCann 1835/38 (Dates do not match again.) Joshua McCann is listed as a farmer at the age of 32 with birth place listed as NC. (1850 census) There is also a James Stewart listed, age 51. Also, Martha McCann age 29, Joshua age 32, with children listed. The children are Marion, James, Jefferson, and John. I also found a William Moncrief age 22, farmer, Mary age 30, keeping house, Sarah age 2, and Laura age 1, in Bryan County, Georgia. I hope this will help you in your search. Beth

    3. Dodie, I truly defer to your knowledge of this family and will impose once more to help me through this maze. Some questions l. If John is younger than James and Daniel, what birth dates do you fix for each one? 2. If this John disappeared in 1798 (making him a possible candidate for the 1803 John of Wilkes county), is there a census report of 1800 for him? 3. If he left then the Wagon Road south was one alternative but many also went west. I know you did some work on the Johns who went west; IF forced to select one these for the son of Lawrence, who would it be? As you know, I have leaned for several years that the John of Wilkes was the lost son of Lawrence ; perhaps it can not be proven but now I am willing to let others shoot at this prospect. Help me, Dodie. 1. [McCANN] John McCan
    2. Jim: As to your question about John McCan, as you know Kellog did some early research on that family, and he seemed to believe that John was one of the sons of Lawrence McCan, as well as Daniel and Patrick and James. He mentions that in a list of Washington County Pa. militia was John McCan, along with Daniel and James. They had settled after the war near Lightburn on McCan's Run. Daniel, he says was in Capt Timothy Downey's Co and listed in the 5th class, The place of Daniel in the 5th class tells us that he was older than John, who was in the 2nd class. James was in the 4th class, so that makes him younger than Daniel, but older than John. Washington County at that time covered all south-western Pa and even territory of Virginia. - land which was still in dispute with Va. This John McCan is the one who disappeared suddenly, last appearing in 1798. He had signed as a wwitness to Patrick's marriage to Hannah Johnson in 1787. In 1796 he signed for surety for Patrick to keep an Inn in 1796. For other John McCan's Kellog writes: John McCan appears in Colonel Ewings Battalion for the Flying Camp in Aug 1776. John McCan appears as a Pvt in the muster roll of Capt Horatio Slaggetts Co in the 3rd Maryland Rg't. for Dec. 1779. John McCan In a muster roll of Maryland Corps in service for the U.S commanded by Capt Thomas Beal for Jan to Oct in 1780. John McCan also in a list for the 4th Co, 4th Btn. Captains George Richards, and Capt Bird. (no place listed) Dorothy

    3. Henry: I'm glad you're still out there, You never know when you will find out something, It is very difficult to find info when the families were here 200 years ago, There are only three of my generation living. The other two could care less or don't know anything, Just keep plugging along. It takes a long time. I have had a lot of help on this Web-site from many, Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: Henry McCann <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, June 03, 2002 8:43 PM Subject: Re: [McCANN] Henry McCan > Ann, > > Yes, I've been reading and also printing out just about everything.
