Jane, Please take me off the McCann list. I've really enjoyed all the exchanges, but I just don't have the time to keep up right now. Thanks, Leslie, for doing that systematic check and reminding us again to try both ways. We just did not need others making our McCan/Mc Canns any harder to find that they were! I don't think that space should be there at all. Perhaps it is also time to remember some of the other possible spellings when you get to early records like tax lists where you might see MCan or Machan. Regarding searching for "McCann" vs. "Mc Cann". I tried the two different spellings for the 1850 census on ancestry.com and got 42 hits for "McCann" and 1083 for "Mc Cann". This is something I never would have thought of, as I grew up spelling it McCann without the space. It is probably just a transcription error. Also, some of the databases on ancestry (I only checked a few) will give you different results for each way. From now on, I will check both ways. Leslie

To all who search for your ancestors: Michael McCann born in Ireland in 1829, He was married to Bridget(Unknown), Michael came to the US by way of Quebec, but his wife Bridget did not come because she was afraid of the Indians supposedly, He lived on a farm in Minnesota, he out lived two ladies who supposedly were his housekeepers. When there was a third housekeeper, the local priest Father O'Callahan came by buckboard to Michael's home with the news that Bridget had died in Ireland, and quickly married Michael and his housekeeper. Michael lived to be 105 years old, he outlived the second wife and two others after she died. He died in 1934 in Minnesota, Donna, who shared the story with me didn't know any of his children, We haven't as yet found an obit on him, How many children could have resulted from these unions? We'll never know. So, when we think we have hit a brick wall, WE HAVE! Ann T, Meyer (Nee Ann McCann)

HI Jane, Thanks. Is that true of any of the other census indexes on ancestry?. Jane, that rule applies to all of the 1920 census on ancestry.com. I recently discovered this trick myself and located tons of "missing" McCanns. I imagine it may be true for other years also. Also, I have found that you cannot trust soundex, I have found my McCanns listed as "McCarny" and "McKann" which didn't show up when I used the soundex option. If you have access to an index (genealogy library has them), it is best to locate the county and search all the Ms for possible misspellings. Oh, and annother note of caution: I put in too much information at first and couldn't locate people because I had entered Place of Birth as "PA" instead of "Pennsylvania!" Hi all: This is a departure from our usual type of search for McCanns, but thought you might find this interesting. In the course of researching my RICH faamily, who were living in Oregon later in family history which included their gold mining experiences, I ran into these McCanns. This was from Klondike Gold Rush - taken from "Ghosts of the Goldrush". By Clary Craig, post office worker list for people dying or leaving Klondile. Geo P. McCann - Aug 8 1901-Tacoma Wash.
