Hi, Folks, Again, trying to help another list member, I pulled together some information concerning two Thomas McCanns found in early Harrison County, VA. Some of this material was shared with us earlier by Dodie, and some I collected in Harrison Co. and via marriage record books based on the public records of Harrison County, now WV as well as a book containing cemetery lists for that county. Please note that I have interpreted the term "cousin" literally as "first cousin" in this cobbling together of a "family" tree. Sandy, You need to reply to the message board which is where that email was posted in order for the sender to receive your response because I don't recognize this person as a member of our list. If you have problems, let me know. BTW, there have been Coffmans and McCAnns in Fayette Co., PA since, at least, 1810 --- that just happens to be the earliest census data I have right at hand. Oh, and it always helps to attach a date of some sort to one of the people whose name you list so that others can have some idea of the time frame and then it helps, too, if you name a place. Hi, Folks, Trying to help another member of this list who is searching for an early John. . . . pulled together some material most of which has already been posted but since I did a rethink on some of this, thought this summary might be of help to someone else and I'd certainly appreciate any additions or corrections: John "McChan" b. abt. 1748 d. 1821 living in Frederick Co., MD John McChan listed as a soldier in the MarylandLine who applied for a pension in Frederick, MD 4/3/1818, aged about 70 who in 1820 said he was 70 and that he had an 11 year old son at the time. Another ref. says he was 73 in 1818 and died in 1821. This on p. 242 of Rev. War Patriots of Frederick, MD by Henry C. Peden, Jr. John b. 3/1/1757 d 2/3/1841 in Lawrence Co., TN who may be the one who enlisted in the Rev. War in Ohio Co., VA On p. 139 of Tenmile Country, Leckey notes a John McCannes as a soldier who took the Oath of Allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia in Ohio County on Sept. 24, 1777, appearing on Zachariah Sprigg's list. John b. 1757-1784, son of Thomas of Harrison Co., VA although this John may have remained in Ireland. Thomas McCANN was said to have been married (1st) to Jane STEWART who died in 1784 leaving 5 children, John, George, Edward, Mary and Jane. These children apparently remained in Ireland (?) Thomas then married (2nd) Martha YAMAN, the daughter of James YAMAN and wife Martha FOOTE. This was in 1794, and they had 10 children [no "John" repeated in that ten.] Thomas left Ireland abt. 1799, sailing from Armagh and landing at Newcastle, Delaware in May. From there he went to Chester County, Pennsylvania, where he stayed about 4 or 5 years. Then he went to Harrison County, VA about 1804-06. Could his son John have sailed then to NC? John b. bef. 1768 m1. 1789 Catherine Brown in Harrison Co., VA and m2 Jane Eyerson bef. 1805. This could be two separate men! May have died in Greene Co., PA which was part of Washington Co., PA, which was part of Westmoreland Co., PA. Greene County, PA: Estate of John McCANN deceased; Letters of Administration granted to Jonathan Johnson the second day of August 1814. Bond with Thomas Miller and John Inghram as securities taken same day. This is the John for whom I have noted: John McCann who lived in Greene County, may be the one appearing on or as: (1) Zachariah Sprigg's list of soldiers who took the oath of Allegiance to the Commonwealth of VA in Ohio Country in 1777 as John McCannes; (2) the Assessment Roll for Cumberland Twp, Washington Co. in 1784 as John McCon; (3) list of "signers" of the petition for a new State of Westsylvania circa 1780 as John McCann; and (4) 1790 Census for Cumberland Township as John McCann with 2 males under age 16. On the 18th his remains were followed by a large concourse of people to the place of burial. A few days previous to his death he felt the need of a Savior, and desired a minister; he was received as a brother in the visible church, and we hope he is now in the church triumphant. Algerine's dad was Martin McCann (first wife Polly?). Elizabeth's parents were Wiley Leggett and Susan? also of same in LA and GA. Any info on identifying Benthal connection appreciated. It was the first day of the census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready...a black book in hand He mounted his horse for long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. The long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; An wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water...as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions...the best she was able. He asked of her children...Yes,she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty ,the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she wispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; and she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. he noted the sex,the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; and saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she,"never forgot" Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon...or not? They came from Scotland, of that she she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they' been here. They spoke of employment,of schooling and such; They could read some and write some...though not very much When the question were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and rode toward the sun. We can imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God Bless you all for another ten years" Now picture a time warp...it's now you or me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for the entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on the long ago day; that the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart;\ Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. When we read this poem, we can understand why it's so difficult to trace our ancestors. Author Unknown I found this on the inter-Net and found it interesting, Just wanted to share it with all of you. Ann
We now have information that we have a Thomas McCann, Michael, Patrick, Ann, and Jane who were born in Ireland, The children of Peter and Margaret. McCann Margaret and the children arrived in the U.S. A. Feb28,1853. They came on the Ship "Garrick" from Liverpool to the Port of New York for Debarkation Manifest I.D. Number 900345 Does anyone relate to this family? Next we find them in Mass, We know for sure that one more Child was born there, Margaret Ann McCann. Understand there is a Peter Junior, and John Charles and Mary Margaret, We know that John Charles was born in Juneau County, Wisconsin, He married Bridget Heaney (Haney) from Galway, Ireland Mary Margaret married a John Wallace Moore. Peter Junior died in Dane County, Madison, Wisconsin, We don't know if Peter Junior had any children or not, they list him as dying at the young age of 21 yrs old. Ann t. Meyer (Nee Ann McCann) P. S. there is also a James McCann listed on the Census. There could be a mistake between the name of Jane and James. ages could be about the same. On the ship manifest , it states that the name is Jane and she is a Female.
My cousin asked me to post this on our McCann site. Does anyone relate to Owen and Mary McCann who came over to the U.S. on the ship "Roscuirs"? Don't think I spelled it correct. They came over on the 4th of February in 185l. I think there was also a Peter McCAnn on the same ship. Ann T. Meyer (Nee Ann McCann)
> Jane, Thanks for the information. This, however, is a sign of my problem too as I have included on the right side in enlarged font some material also submitted by Dodie this month as we were discussing the John of Wilkes as a possible son of Patrick of Pa. and Va. Is it possible your "Yankee" roots show as I note there are no Va. Johns on your listing.?? Also were there not Johns in Pa. in 1800? Or NC 1800? I see an 1810 Pa. See theproblem? This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McCann/Prince/Leggett Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/QOz.2ACEB/719 Message Board Post: I have some rather extension info. on McCann's on Choctaw and Chickasaw rolls but I've tried to put it in here and I keep losing it before I can get it posted. I'm going to type it into an email format and will be happy to forward it to anyone who needs it. This is something I ordered and paid for years ago in hopes of making a connection to my McCann's .. which relate to Martin, etc. from Georgia and Algerine, etc. from LA. I have a very poor copy of the original enrollment sheet for Austin, Alice and Julia, original dates, their parents, dates of birth, the original interview with Alice (intermarried), her letter of approval, a copy of the marriage certificate, Julia's original enrollement on Chickasaw rolls, references to Bowser, Farah E and her children Melvin and George Dewey Coffman, Mary McCann and Sampson Francis McCann. If interested; just let me know. Might take me a few days to get this all done but I'm trying to (finally) consolidate all the misc. McCann / P! rince / Leggett I've accumulated and get it out there in case anyone can use it.
