My grandmother; Lola Benthal McCann Prince was partially crippled her entire life. She referred to it as the "family taint". On my gr grandfather's Civil War Pension Application he lists 9 living children; four of whom are crippled. I know that one or two children were lost at a very young age and I believe it was from this malady. It seems to primarily manifest itself in the feet (but is not limited to the feet). My aunt and her son had it. Her son (my cousin) did research on this prior to his death (not related). According to his findings; this crippling disease is called Marie Chartooth's Disease and is somewhat rare. I'm not sure but I believe it is a form of Muscular Dystrophy. I am told it is often misdiagnosed and subsequently improperly treated. It is definitely hereditary. I have very limited information on Algerine's parents and considerable information on El! izabeth's father but no reports of it before them in the family. That means absolutely nothing since what little info I have is from census or marriage (historical type) records which would not list disabilities. I do not know if this was passed down through either the Leggett's or McCann's or if it was created as a result of the genealogical combinations in this marriage. There are many other families that could be affected so I'm trying to get out the information that I have. I have no way of confirming that this is; in fact, the correct name of the disease. Since the disease was crippling my cousin and his mother I believe that he would have been very careful to get the information right however. If there are others out there with more information; please post it. Does anyone know at this point if there is any way to test for this or determine if someone is a carrier? Is there a Dr. or Nurse McCann / Leggett / King who could get this information for us? If it has! cropped up in your family; please let us know.

I tried to send you some stuff the other day but must have had an old email. No. I've never managed to connect Martin absolutely for sure to anybody we didn't already have. I have requested military records from the Archives but (again) and am hoping to have better luck than I've had in the past since I at least had an approximate birth date and potential date of death. I just posted some info on the McCann's and am hoping to get some more input. Did you see my listing about the 1930 census? Do you have any input on who Anna might be? There are several Anna's that came over on the boat but I just found that info a couple of days ago and haven't had time to check it out. Also ... I posted on some info re: a family disease that I'm not sure originates with the McCann's or the Leggett's. The first I have of it is in the children of Algerine and Elizabeth. Glad to hear from you. I am new to McCann research and am excited to find McCann relatives. Please share the names of the McCann's who went to Lamar County, Texas. I am a descendant of Martin, James C. and his daughter Mary Alice McCann Troutman Rushing. James C. and his family are listed on the 1880 Leake County, Mississippi census. Mary Alice went to Houston County, Texas in the late 1880's. I believe Mary Alice's brother Owen eventually settled in Gregg County, Texas. At this time I do not know where the rest of James C.'s children lived. Jane: I had heard of the Armagh Ancestry at the time I had written to Ireland quite some time ago. Finally got the E-Mail addtess from the Roots site, This is from the Church records only. You had to give some indication that your Ancestors were from there before they would offer to search. I asked for the Marriage record of Peter and Margaret McCann, Also the Baptism records for the five children born to them in Ireland, The fee that they quoted was $10,00 for the Marriage record, $15.00 for the Baptism records plus $2.00 I imagine that was for postage. You pay in advance by credit card. Much to my surprise, when I recieved the info it was only $27,00 complete. I thought they would charge $15.00 for each Baptism. I would imagine that Stephen McCann was a brother to Peter and was the first one to come and buy the land from the Government, Also that Michael was also a brother . Does anyone relate to anyone of these names ?. They are from the county Armagh and the Parish of Seafin and Clonium, which they list as part of Killevy and Jonesborough Parishes.
