He was born 1777 in Carlisle, Cumberland Co, PA. His mother died within a year after his sister was born. The sister was given to a lady to raise, and the father kept Michael for a year or two. Father decided he could not take care of him, so Michael was bound to a man named McFarland to learn the fuller's trade. Soon thereafter the father died. The McFarlands were good to Michael. He got to got to school, a privilege as there were no public schools at that time. Apparently Michaael lived with the McFarlands until he was 18 or 19 years old. About 1898 Michael migrated to Guilford Co, NC. He became friends with a local attorney who encouraged him to study and read his law boods. In 1801 or 1802 he married Elizabeth Woody, a Quaker. They had a daughter Mary. Elizabeth died at some point. Michael married again in 1808 to Sarah Viola Hitchcock, dau of John Hictchcock Sr. of Guilford Co. In 1823 or 24 Michael acquired 6! 00 acres in Carter Co (later Johnson Co), TN. Michael cleared land and farmed but continued to study law. Clues to the names of his parents might be found in the names of his children: Susanna McCann Cridlebaugh 1812-1903 James S. McCann 1813-1872 Isaac McCann 1816-1835? Sarah McCann Hayworth 1818-1861 Keziah McCann Ricks 1820- John Love McCann 1822- William Wesley McCann 1825-1907 Peter Calvin McCann 1828-1895 Any information would be appreciated.
Hello List, I recently learned that my McCan/ns are descended from the James McCan and Margaret Allen mentioned in several past postings. They married in Monroe County, Virginia, in 1816. This James McCan is also thought to have fought in the War of 1812. According to family history notes sent to me by a newly discovered relative, this James McCan died in Xenia, Green County, Ohio in 1844. Attempting to verify this, I searched LDS FHL Film #535141, which is will records from the Greene County Court of Common Pleas for 1835-1854. Happily enough, I found a will by a James McCan proved after his death in March 1844! The will was dated Sept. 23, 1841, and left everything to his "beloved wife, Margaret." It was first presented in court on March 12, 1844, so I assume he died shortly before this date. The hearings on the will included testimony from a Samuel McCan. (who said there were no other kin in the county who wanted to be executor.) I am guessing this is a son of James and Margaret. So, I plan to look at the 1850 Ohio Census to find where Margaret, from Virginia, and perhaps a son, Samuel, went. This brings me to this 1850 Ohio Census, Columbiana County, census entry that has been puzzling listers, according to the list archives: John McCann age 78 - Occupation none, 1000 acres - born in Va 1772 with Margaret McCann age 59, born in Va. 1791 Rachel McCann age 22 born in OH Samuel McCann age 23, farmer, born in OH in 1827 I am wondering if this John could be Margaret Allen McCan's's father-in-law, with whom she is living after the death of her husband, James, plus her two children the Samuel I am looking for, plus Rachel. FYI: In the 1840 Ohio Greene County Census, there are two McCanes in the index, J.N. and few houses away, W.B. (W.B. sure looks like McCan to me on the actual census page!) In J.N.'s household, there is a man and woman both between 60 and 70, as well as a younger couple and children. Perhaps this is James and Margaret, plus their children, plus the above John and his wife, the grandparents? I'll keep digging but it all seems promising! Also: W.B. McCan appears to be Wilson B. McCan, who died before 1850. His wife was Catherine (circa 1812-Feb.10,1884) and they had children Cassandra/Cassander E. (1836? 1839? -1909, never married) Cinderella (circa 1840 -Dec. 13,1879, never married) and James (1841-1913) James married Luella Hatch (1852-1900) and they had son at least one child, John Gordon (1873-1885) Anyone relate to this family? I am wondering if W.B. is a son of James and Margaret Allen McCan. ~ Sheila R. McCann

http://home.earthlink.net/~bwjohnson/csa/ra_11b.htm The above is the email address for a Civil War site. I found the following information about my gggrandfatherJames C. McCann. Other McCanns are listed under the Roster of Soldiers Index for Georgia. James C. McCann, son of Martin McCann, is listed as having served in the Randolph County, Georgia, "Randolph Light Guards". His listing appears as follows: McCann, James C.-Private Apr.25, 1862. Transferred to Co. B, 47th Regt. Ga. Inf. May 12, 1862. In Catoosa Hospital at Griffin, Ga. Dec. 21, 1863. No later record.
Hi, Folks, Just noticed that Ancestry.com has added more older newspapers to their files. Thought I try to see how far back some might go. Did a search for our most common illusive McCanns, those hidden Johns. Found the sad report of one in a Reno, NV paper (Reno Evening Gazette) of March 18, 1879. This was the report of a Coroner's Inquest in Reno. The inquest was apparently held on March 17. John McCann was crushed by a pile of lumber on the prior Sunday where appears to have been the 16th, if my calendar is correct. This John was reportedly a "stranger" who was a native of Scotland; his age was given as "about 33," giving him a birth year about 1846. Does this John fit in anyone's tree? Best regards, Jane
