It could very well be. I didn't look any further in the book, as I had a hard time looking up what I did. They will not loan the book out, but they listed the three McCanns' for me, I was interested in Peter McCann. You never know where you will find your ancestors. Have you ever checked over to Armagh or Portadown to check on him. I had good luck finding my Ancestors through the Catholic Church, They found the marriage of my Great Grand Parents and the Baptism records of the five children born there. In this book I find reference to three McCanns" Nichalos McCann Barony of Balrothery James McCann Leiutenant 69th Volunteer Peter McCann not mustered, discharged as Sergeant Not mustered; this means that, although the Officer had received his commission from the Governor of the State of New York, The United States Military Authorities would not :Muster"him, if his Company was found reduced by the casualties of war, below the minium of 43. Don't know if any of these McCanns' relate to me, but would like to find out how to find out more on this. Could anyone tell me where to find more info, Ann T. Meyer (Nee Ann McCann)

Does anyone relate to a James McCann and wife Mary found on the census in Madison, Wisconsin Dane county, in 1880 They list as living in the household: James 55 yrs old Mary no age for her James 22 Frank 20 Peter 18 John 16 Mary 13 Son 10 Maggie If you relate, would be interested in any info that you might have on this family. Hi" When I first joined this site, someone made the remark that she related to the McCanns, Two ways. I also do, My Great Grand Father was Peter McCann, My Great Grand Mother was Margaret McCann, (That was her maiden name) Also one person was especially interested in the name of Stephen McCann, I also belileve that Stephen McCAnn was old enough to be a Baptism sponser in 1842 in Ireland, also Michael McCann to be a Sponsor for Baptism in 1839. I mention Stephen McCann, as I believe him to be a brother of Peter McCann. and the first McCann to own the McCann farm. Stephen first bought this farm in 1857 FROM THE GOVERNMENT, AT THAT TIME IT WAS IN ADAMS COUNTY, WISCONSIN.By 1864 Stephen McCann had moved to the town of Gordon, State of Kansas, The Farm then went to James McCAnn. The way I figure this out is that: Stephen and James are the brothers of Peter and came ahead and purchased the land. Can anyone relate to this family? Ann T. Meyer (Nee Ann McCann)
Hi Ann, I am the one who is interested in Stephen as it is an unsual McCann name. I have a Peter and Stephen MCCann who were either brothers or cousins on the same large farm in County Tyrone. Of course they had a James also and a william and an Owen. An Arthur was nearby. The name Stephen has disappeared from the McCann clan in that area of Tyrone. I believe the son or grandson of Stephen either died chidless or emigrated. Our names are so similar yet yours are from Armagh or Derry as I recall...mine are certainly from Fallgherin, Ballygawley and Lurganboy in Tyrone---Armagh Diocese. Thye go back to 1769. The last Stephen I can find in records there is about 1833. I will be gone for a couple of days. "Talk" to you when I get back. Hi All, I have been searching for my McCann's for what seems like an eternity and recently enjoyed a 'breakthrough' after a very empty 6 years.... The parents in Generation 1 are from an in-law's obituary and are all I have to go on for now... The breakthrough concerned Charles A. McCann and his wife Jessie Hutchcroft. They had died young and orphaned my grandfather at age seven. His two younger siblings were adopted out. What was once thought to be an accident turned out to be that Jessie McCann died in 1916 of an illness and in April of 1917 Charles was shot and killed. Any connection or info will help!! CHARLES A2 MCCANN (SAMUEL1) was born 1878, and died April 05, 1917 in Decatur Co., IA. He married JESSIE HUTCHCROFT September 13, 1902 in Mediapolis, Des Moines Co., IA, daughter of GEORGE HUTCHCROFT and JANE DRINKALL. Notes for CHARLES A MCCANN: Buried in same plot with wife and George McCann infant son. Death Bk D 1906-1913 . 151 . Decatur Co. Courthouse Decatur County Journal-Iowa Thursday, April l2, l9l7 CHARLES MCCANN, formerly engaged in business at Decatur, was shot and killed Thursday evening of last week by ARTHUR CAVE at the CAVE farm near Decatur. CAVE was placed under arrest by Sheriff John A. Fulton and brought to Leon and placed in jail. ANDREW SELL and ED CAVE, father of ARTHUR CAVE, had gone to ARTHUR CAVE's home to look at some pigs. MR. SELL had gone for the purpoe of buying the pigs but was unable to make a deal and went back to Decatur. A little later JOHN WOODARD, his son, CLIFF WOODARD, ARTHUR CAVE and CHARLES MCCANN got MR. WOODARD's car and drove out to CAVE's farm to look at the pigs, JOHN WOODARD bought all the pigs that had been offered for sale. The party then went out in front of ARTHUR CAVE's house where their car had been left and MR. WOODARD started to pay for the pigs. He had no blank check, MR. MCCANN had one so at MR. WOODARD's request he started to fill it for the amount due for the hogs. He was sitting at the time on the fender writing the check when someone said that MRS. ED CAVE, ARTHUR's mother, was coming over from the ED CAVE home a quarter of a mile east. She had seen the men over there and came over to see what they were doing suspecting that some of them had been drinking! . She was afraid that her son was going to sell the pigs at too low a price. She began talking to ARTHUR about being drunk. She told him that he had promised her that he would stop drinking and that he had failed to keep his promise. Those present say that as a result of the argument between mother and son, ARTHUR finally ordered his mother to leave and stated that if she did not go he would see that she did. He went to the house and soon returned with a revolver. ED CAVE told his wife that she had better go as ART was drunk and in a bad humor and she started away. When young CAVE came out with the gun his father tried to pacify him. JOHN WOODARD also made an effort to quiet CAVE but he lined them up alongside a fence and told them to stay there. Then he turned to MR. MCCANN and ordered him to get over with the rest. MR. MCCANN did not refuse to do so but tried to talk young CAVE into giving up the gun. He was standing close to CAVE and each time CAVE drew the gun on him he knocked it out of the way with his left hand. The third time young CAVE fired twice, one ball striking MR. MCCANN in the temple and the other shot going wild. The others then started to run and young CAVE shot three times presumably in their direction. JOHN WOODARD and son, CLIFF, ran to ORVILLE FLETCHER's home and telephoned to Sheriff Fulton. Sheriff Fulton, accompanied by his Deputy, John Osborne, and Frank Farquhar, started immediately in a car for the scene of the shooting. Drs. Layton and Bowman, of Leon, were also summoned and Dr. Eiker, who happened to be near, also rushed to the CAVE farm. Earl Riley joined Sheriff Fulton and party in Decatur and accompanied them to the scene of the crime. As they neared the CAVE home they met Dr. Eiker, who, accompanied by Earl Riley, hastened to the body of MCCANN lying not far away. They found that he was still living. Sheriff Fulton found young CAVE in the car that had been left standing near the house and quickly placed him under arrest. The body of MCCANN was carried to the house. Doctors Layton and Bowman who had arrived by this time, and Dr. Eiker, did what they could for the wounded man but death occurred in a short time after the arrival of the physicians and officers. Young CAVE made no resistance when disarmed by the Sheriff. The gun with which he had done the shooting was a 32 calibre and had been fired five times, leaving one cartridge in the gun when it was taken away from him. CAVE was brought to Leon and placed in jail. A coroner's inquest was held in the Court Room in Leon last Saturday morning by Dr. H.R. Layton, Coroner of Decatur County. Testimony of a number of witnesses was heard after which a Coroner's Jury composed of G.R. Farquhar, F.C. Gardner and Charles E. Hurst, returned the following verdict: We do find the said deceased came to his death by a gunshot wound in the head inflicted by a gun in the hands of ARTIE CAVE, with felonious intent, on the twelfth day of April, l9l7, in Decatur Township, Decatur County, Iowa, and we further find that he did come to his death feloniously; and that a crime has been committed upon the deceased and that ARTIE CAVE is the name of the person whom the Jury believes has committed it. The date for the preliminary hearing has not been decided upon by County Attorney Wm. J. Springer, but it will probably be in a few days. The funeral of CHARLES MCCANN was held at Decatur, Sunday and the body taken from there to Lamoni and placed beside his wife, who died last November. MR. MCCANN leaves a family of seven children, the oldest being fourteen years of age. Just what will be done with the orphaned children has not been decided at this time. The family has many good friends in their home community and they will undoubtedly see that they are placed in proper hands for the future. Nearly one hundred cars accompanied the funeral party on Sunday to Lamoni. There were over eighty cars when leaving Leon and many additional cars joined the procession at Davis City. Seeing Patrick's name in the index just meant that he had to be somewhere in Roane County, even in Geary Dist. as the index said, especially because his wife was a Geary. Well, his family was on page 4, not 11 as the index stated. Must admit, that "4" did look a bit like two "1"s! Had found Smiths in Newton, Geary Dist., Roane County so I was searching all those pages. . . Wrong Smiths! I should have looked for your Samuel in the index but with a name like Smith it seemed futile. The obvious, yet still interesting situation, is that in 1870 these two families were living almost next door! Samuel Smith was the local M.E. This is a very active gen. society with a good library of their own. They cover many of the northwestern counties in WV. This McCan/McCann family had settled in Lewis Co., WV which was a part of Harrison County, if I recall correctly, and earlier a larger Monongalia Co. and before that Augusta Co. The early records are very sketchy. According to my calculations, this Patrick was my ggg grandfather's second cousin, assuming that all our speculations are correct. No, I have not located the children of this Patirck but I'm assuming that those who married into the Smith family were all his children since Patrick is the only McCan/McCann I've found in Roane County at that time. That's why I tried finding him in the 1870 census but was unsuccessful. Perhaps someone who descends from this branch will read your inquiry and respond with the details. R! egards, Jane
