Looking for information on my ggggrandfather Thomas Nash MCCANN born 1809 in Calais, ME died June 9, 1883. His wife was Margaret Nuns Alley, they married on June 27, 1841 in Nantucket, MA I came about my MCCANN ancestry quite by accident. The information I had was that my ggrandfather Charles F Andrews was born on Nantucket, MA. I had found out that he his original name was Charles Welcomb. He was living with Almira (FISHER) WELCOMB, ANDREWS and her husband George F ANDREWS on Martha's Vineyard, MA. He took the ANDREWS name when he was about 10. My wife and I traveled to Nantucket to obtain a birth certificate, etc. While there we discovered things we were not expecting. Upon receiving the birth certificate, we found that his father was Benjamin Franklin MCCANN, born on March 6, 1849 in Canton, MA, died on November 28, 1875 at sea. We could not make out the mother's first name (most likely Amira), but her last name was WELCOMB and the baby's name was Charles WELCOMB. He was born December 17, 1872 "out of wedlock." In addition, at the historical society we found a book about the MCCANNs starting with Thomas Nash MCCANN and his wife Margaret Nuns Alley. Benjamin was his son and therefore my gggrandfather. Looking for confirmation on where Thomas was born and information on his parents/grandparents. Hope you could follow that. I will just give the pertinent details; At his residence in Walker township, near this borough, on Sunday morning, 22d ins., after a lingering illness, JOHN McCAHAN, Esq., aged 77 years. He was born in November of 1780 in a small village, called Drumnahaigh, in the north of Ireland, landed in the United States in 1793, bound as an apprentice to Steel & McClain of Carlisle to learn the printing business. He worked as a Jour with M. Duffey, in Huntingdon, 1797. Duffey failed and went to Baltimore, when Mr. McCahan followed him, and worked for William Pechin - he commenced business in Huntingdon, January 1801 with the Huntingdon Gazette, of which paper he was the editor and proprietor - quit printing 9 July, 1828, when he was succeeded by his son J. Kinney McCahan. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm looking for information about family that we know very little about. My grandmother, Mary Rita Barbara McCann, born around 1924, parents James Stephen McCann (b:1888?) & Mary Jane Doherty, of Quebec, possibly Montreal. James Stephen McCann's parents were John McCann (b:1854?) & Theresa Rodgers. John McCann's parents are listed as Patrick McCann & Margaret (or Marguerite) McCord/McCard. Patrick McCann's parents are listed in his marriage record, but I can't make out what their names are. Patrick & Margaret were married in Quebec in 1852, but I have no birth year. If anyone has more information on this line, or might know where I could pick up the trail after Patrick McCann, it would be much appreciated! What years are we talking about with Horatio Judd McCann. My first (closest) McCann ancestor was back around 1800, her name was Annie. We tend to think her father was a James McCann or McHan, depending on whether the spelling changed at that point. She was born ca 1793, married a Samuel James Milam. She was born in South Carolina and died in Arkansas. I will do a search on your Horatio and see what I can find. Hope to hear from you. I have four brothers: Peter, b. 1821; John, b. 1826; Arthur, b. 1828; and Patrick, b. 1831. They all immigrated and lived in Hibbert, Perth County, Ontario. Two of the brothers were in the 1851, 1861, 1871 census in Hibbert. Those were John and Arthur. On the 1851 census, Patrick was living with the family (he was about 20) but the last census he was marked in the U.S. Peter was with a wife Mary in Hibbert, but after that census, I have not been able to find either Patrick or Peter for sure. In the late 1880s, Arthur moved his family to North Dakota. Have you found anything more about this family? Could you share the letter that you have?
