This was a family of Shirt makers. The Matthew listed is my 2x great grandfather. They got to TROY New York about 1850 but moved around a lot. His son James was a shirt factory owner in the late 1890s, in North Adams, Massachusetts. But in between he was in Missouri, in 1860, where he married. And they spent some time in Maine and in Ontario Canada. James died in San Diego County, California. James had a couple of sons, most notable was Allen Rockwell McCann, who was a Naval Vice Admiral in WWII. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. McCann 18yo, Sally 21yo, Betty 21yo, James 28yo -- these are common names in my family (except Sally) -- "G" possibly for Gerald can be found several times -- I have found evidence of John & Margaret in Luzerne Co., PA as early as 1852 -- not sure how much time if any they spent in NY and have no idea what became of the rest of the family ??? John McCann was born in 1828. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Charles is listed in the Troy 1880 US census and city directories in the 1870's. He married to Katherine/Kate O'Loughlin and had a son Charles F. McCann, any my G grandmother Florence McCann (Danforth). I've never had any luck tracing his parents, siblings, or their arrival, however, and my guess is that he was orphaned. There is a James McCann in Troy around that time around the same age? There are a number of McCann's in the Albany and Troy areas starting about 1850 and with growth until 1900. I recall seeing a Felix McCann in Albany in the 1880 US. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have my own McCann coming to NY from Sligo in 1847. His name was Owen. Records from the Emigrant savings bank (available on ancestry.com) tell me his mother and fathers name even though they were deceased at the time as well as his son and daughter who were living in NY and arrived after him. It also lists the ship and year he arrived in NY on. Since you're looking for a NY landing have you looked at the Castlegarden web site (www.castlegarden.org) which lists the people and ships that arrived in the port of NY during your stated time period? It was Ellis Island before there was Ellis Island. Good Luck. Bill Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jemwalsh Surnames: Cyrus, McCann, Mahan, Hartley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mccann/1897.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I have some information on your William who married Sarah Cyrus. They were living in Wayne county, WV in 1870 and 1880. In 1870 William was indexed as "Wm. H. Mahan." He was a blacksmith and I've found that blacksmiths tended to move from place to place more so than the average in this era. According to a One World Tree entry for William, he was the son of Manuessa/Manessa/Manassah McCann. I found that family in Pike county Ohio in 1850. Manessa was a cooper in 1850; he was b.c. 1817 in Ohio, possibly in Ross county; his wife's name was Mary, reported in One World Tree as a Hartley. I have as siblings of Wm H., the following: Anthony, Roscoe, Alonzo, Geo. Washington, Ida, Annie, Minnie, and possibly two older half siblings: Sarah E. and Charles. You should be able to locate this family in the Census of Wayne county WV in 1870 and 1880. I do not know whether or not I have a connection to this family. Hi, Folks, Have stumbled upon a Tacy McCann in a Quaker record for the Redstone Monthly Meeting saying that she was transferring there in 1801 from the Fairfax M.M. which had referred her in 1800. Found in records of the Fairfax M.M. in VA that she was the daughter of Samuel and Mary DAVIS. Based on the records in that meeting, it would appear that she had come from Radnor, PA to Fairfax, and that she was likely born some time prior to 1760. Have found a tree which lists a Tacy Davis b. 1756 in Radnor, Delaware, PA to a Samuel Davis and his wife Mary Annis. That information appears to fit this Tacy who arrived in SW PA abt. 1801. Does anyone know who her McCann husband was? Regards, Jane
