Harvey Allen Cox Note: Vardry McBee supposedly died years before, but was listed in the 1840 Walker Co., AL census, age 102, living with Robert Magby. Note: Robert Magby's son William and daughter-in-law died leaving 2 daughters, Amanda and Rebecca, the family was listed on 1860 census for Pike Co., AR. James A. Baker and Margaret Magby were made guardians of the two girls after their parents death. This James A. Baker was my gg grandfather, and the girls were listed in his household on the 1870 census for Montgomery Co. AR. SOURCES: Historical Southern Families by John B. Boddie Union Parish, LA census 1860 Montgomery Co, AR census 1850, 1860, 1870 Pike Co, AR census 1860 North Carolina marriages database, Ancestry.com Social Security Administration The point I'm trying to make is that the Magby/McBee family listed here is quite probably connected. I believe that Vardry McBee is father or grandfather to Robert Magby, and I believe that Robert Magby is father to Margaret Magby. Remember, he was married before and she could have come from his first marriage, else why would the court grant her and her husband guardianship of Robert's granddaughters? Robert was still alive at this time. What I need is someone who may have some kind of reference about Margaret Magby's origins with her name and not a mark on an early census report. -------------------------------------------------------------------- United we stand, divided we fall. 3. http://batsonsm.tripod.com/symp/ Christ Church is one of the most noted, and certainly one of the most beautiful churches in Greenville. The church began in 1820 as St. James Mission Church on land given by Vardry McBee. The present church was built circa 1853. History records that the architect was the Rev. John D. McCollough, and that he used plans drawn by Joel R. Poinsett. Bishop Thomas Davis consecrated the church in 1854. The beautiful grounds and well-kept cemetery, now host in restful sleep, some of the most outstanding minds produced by the city of Greenville. No person associated with this church is better remembered than the son of a Methodist Bishop who became a Confederate General and later an Episcopal Bishop. Ellison Capers is always present in spirit, wherever you venture on the grounds of Christ Church. Picture on the web page above

    3. http://greenvilleonline.com/news/2000/10/29/howtextilesbecameking.htm In South Carolina, only William Gregg at Graniteville had developed an extensive textile operation by the time of the Civil War. Few mills in Upstate In Greenville County, in the lightly populated Upstate, there were only a few attempts to start textile operations along the narrow streams and rocky shoals of the Enoree, Reedy and Saluda rivers. By 1860, three small mills had been established, none by Greenvillians: Rhode Islanders developed Lester's Factory, later Pelham Mill, on the Enoree, and William Bates and Co., nearby on Rocky Creek; and Reedy River Factory at Conestee was founded by North Carolinian Vardry McBee. They spun only coarse thread and fabric, but during the Civil War, when the Confederate government allowed only one day's production a week for civilian use, "rich and poor, high and low, came in splendid carriages, in sulkies, in wagons, and in carts to buy cloth."

However, you list some as starting out in Tennessee, then being in Michigan. Could you have meant Mississipppi? This is a mistake frequently made; we just have too many "M" states. I often get the "A" states mixed up, too. My Montgomerys came into the colonies in 1765 in South Carolina, then moved to Tennessee, then Mississippi. The earliest of my Montgomerys that I have a record of , Robert, was born in 1765 and was the youngest of nine brothers. I don't know the names of his parents or any of his brothers. These that you mention could easily be mine, if you really meant Mississippi rather than Michigan. 3. McBee, Jas. W. (Wilson) McBee, M. E. (Nacogdoches) James W. McBee was a Postmaster in Wilson Co TX which is southeast of Bexar Co and east/adjacent to Atascosa where I have five families of McBees in the 1870 census. I don't know when he was a postmaster but if you do please contact me and let me know what family line he belongs to. There was a James McBee in the home of Jessee McBee, Dicie's father who was the same age as John McBee in 1860 (16) but he has proven to not be Jessee's son. Could this be the same person? Dicie McBee McCandless Dancer's second husband, Jesse Ward Dancer was accused of murder but escaped in 1876 in Frio Co just west of Atascosa. The Sheriff of Frio Co. sent out a number of warrants and one of those went to Wilson Co. The Sheriff of Wilson Co was charged with failure to enforce the warrant but apparently nothing came of it. In fact I have found that J.W. Dancer made his way to AZ/NM for a while and came back to Tom Green Co (at that time it was roughly 5-8% of Texas.

PML searches are provided to the paying supporters of Rootsweb (no longer available) and I always cite the finding in its entirety unless it is a listing of many surnames not related such as a marriage listing transcription. 1. [McBEE] Rebecca McBee/What part of Paulding Co 1850?
    2. Ron McCandless
    3. In the 1850 census of Paulding Co GA, there was a woman we believe to be the wife of Wm. McBee who died in Jackson Co AL in 1839. In 1851, the western half of Paulding Co became Polk Co GA. One of our fellow researchers was kind enough to send me a scan of that 1850 page but it doesn't show me what I want to know. I want to find out WHERE in Paulding Co they were so that I can determine if they were in the part of Paulding Co that became Polk Co in 1851, less than a year after that census was taken. I've found another line of kin that were right on the border of Cherokee AL in Polk Co. shortly after that census so it might be that this is where Dicie, Rebecca's Grand daughter met her future husband, Alex McCandless. Can anyone tell me about the location of the Mcbees in Paulding Co? Ron McCandless

    1. [McBEE] MagBee/McBee before 1785 in Washington Co TN/NC???
    2. Ron McCandless
    3. This is from my Roots PML search engine. A McGee/McGehee researcher found this data and thought it might be the wrong name but I think we need to see if the name really was McBee. Washington Co TN. was the entire state in 1777 as a county of NC, in 1779 Sullivan Co was formed and in 1783 Greene and Davidison were formed but all these counties were in the Northeast corner of what is now TN and those counties became the State of Franklin. The migration path I've found for about half of the TN surnames I've researched proved to come to Washington Co then proceed to migrate Southwest toward the area of Marion and Hamilton Cos. TN I'm asking if anyone has any data on McBee folks that could have been in the area of Northeast TN before 1800. Specifically, William McBee that died in 1839 in Jackson Co AL just south of Marion Co TN. This is the husband of Rebecca who was in the 1850 census of Paulding Co GA. There are two Wm. MagBee (Jr. and St. do not specifically mean father and son but could merely designate older and younger men of the same name) That doesn't mean they weren't father and son though. In the deed records below you will notice that the Grantor was the state of NC, that means that Wm. McBee and James McBee Jr. received land warrants or grants that were registered on November 10, 1784 while TN was still part of NC. There should be a record of that and I'll try to find it to see if they're original application might be extant.
