Irish emigrants to UK: I have managed to do lookups for dozens of listers, and happily have been lucky to pinpoint some families exactly, adding new data to listers' research. However, there has been less success where information given was very thin, and the number of "hits" ran into thousands for common Irish names. I hope that I have replied to everyone, but if you are still waiting, please could you contact me again - although I sent replies explaining difficulties to some people and asked for extra information, I did not get a reply so don't know whether or not they want a more detailed look up. There have been up to 5000 results for some of the common names requested, which prevents detailed research. If you ask for Michael Murphy for example, with no other information, then all I can do is tell you how many hundreds of them were living in England Scotland and Wales in 1881. Please remember that I cannot to blanket searches for a surname, unless it is unusual (and most Irish names are not). Where the name is very unusual, I will send details of all instances as they are highly likely to be related. I need FIRST NAMES, approximate YEAR OF BIRTH, and if possible, LIKELY REGION OF UK RESIDENCE in 1881 if it is a common name. If the details of spouses or children are available, give these too, as this will probably narrow the research down to the exact family immediately. You also need to bear in mind that seasonal workers may not have been in UK in Spring 1881 at time of census, and many immigrants managed to avoid being recorded at all. In Liverpool alone, 20% of the population were Irish born even as far back as 1851, and this did not include their children born in UK. In parts of Scotland, the figure was almost as high. Just because emigrants who went on to US embarked from Liverpool, does not necessarily mean that they lived there. As I go back to work next week, I can only accept requests for a couple more days.
